NASA ponders "desperate measures" to find Mars craft...12/06/99

By Andrew Quinn

PASADENA, Calif., (Reuters) - Scientists struggling to contact the Mars Polar Lander pinned their hopes on a brief, 10-minute communications window Sunday but said if that failed "more desperate measures" would be considered.

Sunday's opportunity begins at 10:50 a.m. PST (1:50 p.m. EST), and will mark the fifth time that NASA project managers in Pasadena have tried to reach the $165 million spacecraft since its scheduled landing near Mars' south pole on Friday.

The attempt, which will try to use the lander's UHF antenna for the first time to relay signals through the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor satellite, comes as the silence from the Mars Polar Lander becomes increasingly ominous.

"If that doesn't bring us answers, then we really do have to start looking at more desperate measures," said David Crisp, a senior project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The UHF transmitter is intended as a backup system and could be functioning if the craft's main antenna is damaged or pointing in the wrong direction because of a bad landing. Scientists say the UHF communications system has several strengths, sending relatively strong signals just a short distance up to the satellite. But it is contingent on the lander not being in so-called "safe mode", a protective sleep triggered by a problem encountered during touchdown.

If this communications attempt proves fruitless, project managers will begin bombarding the craft with commands to switch to various back-up systems in the event that pieces of its hardware were damaged.

"Everybody has a belief that we can still get a signal from the spacecraft," said Richard Cook, project manager at JPL, noting that another attempt to link up with the lander was set for Sunday evening. "As time goes by, I'm not going to tell you different, we're less confident.

CONFIDENCE BEGINNING TO WANE

Confidence was also clearly beginning to wane on the fate of two grapefruit-size Deep Space probes, which were supposed to detach from the craft and hurtle themselves into the Martian soil at 400 miles per hour Friday.

The probes, dubbed Amundsen and Scott after the first explorers to reach Earth's South Pole, were supposed to have made contact through the Mars Global Surveyor several hours after impact. But like the lander, they have remained stubbornly silent, and project scientists conceded that their short battery lives made it imperative that the begin relaying data soon.

"We're going to continue to try to contact the probes every two hours for the next two days," said Sarah Gavit, project manager for the probe project.

The repeated failure to contact either the lander or the probes threw a pall of gloom over the fate of NASA's latest Mars mission, its first trip back to the red planet since the $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in September due to human miscalculations.

With a series of Mars projects planned for the next decade, NASA administrators in Pasadena were thrown on the defensive about their "faster, better, cheaper" strategy for exploring the solar system.

"I'm not even prepared to spend any time even thinking about the possibility that we've lost a second mission," said Carl Pilcher, NASA's science director for solar system exploration, as reporters peppered him with questions about the feared loss of the lander.

"If we need to worry there's going to be plenty of time to worry and replan," he said.

The Mars Polar Lander, which was launched in January, was designed to search the south pole region of Mars for signs of water ice and clues about the planet's climate past and present.

Ultimately, scientists hope to learn whether life ever existed on Mars or if future, manned missions there could harvest natural resources to help them survive its harsh environment 145 million miles from Earth.

Your Ancestors May Be Martian...11/09/99

By Michael Paine

Suppose that billions of years ago life developed on Mars. Primitive, tiny organisms that thrived deep within rocks and made a living from water and chemicals seeping through those rocks.

Now imagine that a huge asteroid collided with Mars. Millions of martian rock fragments were thrown into space by the force of the impact. Tough martian organisms hitchhiked on some of this ejecta. Many pieces went into orbit around the sun and, after hundreds of thousands of years, some of these collided with the Earth. Of those rocks, a few reached the surface. Some hardy martian organisms survived the journey, colonized the Earth and eventually evolved into the huge variety of life that we know today.

Just a few years ago this scenario would have been dismissed as wildly imaginative and highly improbable. Though still highly speculative, recent discoveries in several fields of science have shown that it is far from impossible -- our ancient ancestors might have been martians.

Moonshadows Seen on Mars...11/03/99

By Greg Clark

Newly-released images from the camera aboard the Mars Global Surveyor show the shadow of Mars' tiny moon Phobos cast on the red dust of the planet's surface. These images, taken by the spacecraft's Mars Orbiter Camera, show the martian terrain at red wavelengths (left panel), blue wavelengths (center), and in a color composite (right).

The shadow in the center is that cast by Phobos. Each of the panels covers an area some 155 miles (250 kilometers) across. No one is certain what causes the dark spots at the bottom of the three craters, though some have suggested that the spots may be dark fields of sand dunes. Solar eclipses on Mars are thousands of times more frequent than on Earth. One of Mars' two small moons casts its shadow across the planet a few times each day. In contrast, a partial or total solar eclipse can be seen from Earth only once or twice a year. The main reason for this frequency is that Mars' satellites are so close to the planet.

Even though the irregularly-shaped Phobos is just 8 miles long and 6 miles wide, the moon orbits just 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) above Mars' surface. The slightly-larger Deimos orbits about 12,500 miles from Mars. In contrast, Earth's moon circles more than 200,000 miles away from Earth. An observer on Mars would have a much greater chance of seeing an eclipse, but that viewer would never be able to witness a total solar eclipse. Because of its distance from Mars, the sun appears to be about two-thirds the size it looks from Earth, but Phobos and Deimos are not large enough to block out the whole solar disk.

The eclipse images were produced by Malin Space Science Systems/JPL/NASA

Face Imagining Opportunities In August And November 1999...08/25/99

McDaniel Report

News Based on current orbital elements recently released by JPL, an SPSR correspondent has discovered that overhead flybys of the Face at Cydonia will occur once in August and again in November 1999. The data indicates that the ground track repeat cycle is 59.04 km (exactly 1 degree of longitude at the equator), and the orbital period is 1.949389 hours. Calculated from this data, the next two Cydonia fly-overs should occur on Orbit 742 and Orbit 1811 after the June 27, 1999 City Pyramid Orbit. The first takes place on August 26, 1999 at 17:07 GMT. The second will occur on November 21, 1999 at 13:14 GMT. The single image of the Face taken in April 1998, because of spacecraft angle and poor weather conditions, is not adequate for a satisfactory result as far as the question of possible artificiality is concerned. The flyovers in August and November should deliver better data, as the sun angle and the camera position will be optimal. Therefore images of the Face during these two opportunities would be of great scientific value. We urge interested parties to write to NASA, JPL, and Malin Space Science Systems, requesting images be taken of the Face on each of these two dates.

The battle of the faces, heats up...06/05/99

by Terry James

Kynthia, About 3 weeks ago you said you wanted no war of words with me. I said OK, and I promised not to use the e-mails against the Hoagland camp (Hoagland, Carlotto and you) again. Now TEM has a link to your page of e-mails about me, cooly slanted to discredit my find and my work.

You obviously can not be trusted. I thought better of you. The 6/4/99 link on TEM's main page leads to your site... Hoaglands web site: http://www.enterprisemission.com/index.html

It is obviously your want to split the Mars Anomalist Camp on this Mars face issue and other work I've done. I guess TEM doesn't like my "free site" competiton. If that is what TEM wants, that's fine with me...However, we all run the risk of causing years of lost time in this squabble. Each of us will lose some credibility in this, but the Hoagland camp has the most to lose in terms of investment. I make no income from my years of work and provide a "free site" release of information and data to all visitors and have a reasonably strong following.

I find your page and TEM's link to it offensive, and an attack on my credibility and my work. I will not just sit back and let you and TEM slam my efforts on The Face at Meridiani or anything else I've done.

I find this situation, TEM's link to your page, your public release of my e-mails, and your page discrediting my work disgusting...The resulting disgust of all planetary anomalists will fall to both sides of the fence.

All previous agreements are off....The War of the Faces has begun in ernest.

Mark Carlotto Comments On "2nd Face On Mars"...05/20/99

Dear Mitch,

I received an e-mail from Carlotto yesterday in which he stated that my new face on mars is "interesting" but he would be "more interested' if there were other anomalies around it.

This link is a 'first release' of a processed example of the many anomalies there are around and near KK's New face on Mars!

The face is in the lower left shadows of that hole in the crater. As you can see, it sits well below the mean elevation of the crater floor...

Feel free to download it, adjust the gamma or brightness and the face will be more pronounced.

The 2nd Face On Mars Photo's Are Real...05/08/99

There has now been a second confirmation from the USGS stating the NASA photo's are authentic. This could be the find of the decade. Remember, Nostradamus predicted "1999 is the year of DISCLOSURE". Below you will see the two letters from the USGS, along with two links to the photo's themselves.

Dear Mitch,

The URL goes to one of the machines here at the U. S. Geological Survey. The WWW system (Mars Explorer for the Armchair Astronaut) was developed here for NASA and we maintain it. So I think the answer is yes, it is an authentic site for NASA data, meant to be a resource for researchers and the general public. I have looked at the original Viking images in this area and they look essentially the same, so I do not believe that the imagery you are looking at has been tampered with in any way. Let me know if you have other questions.

Patty Garcia (USGS)

Hi Mitch....

Here is what I discovered regarding the "new face artifact" that was originally discussed on other WWW sites. As the USGS employee responsible for the development of the "PDS Mars Explorer for the Armchair Astronaut" I can only verify that the artifact in question is a real feature on the planet (see attachments below). We looked at the original EDR raw frame that was used in the MDIM and discovered this feature also exists in the original frame. No "hacking" was done on our site to artificially create this artifact.

Hope this helps...Eric Eliason (USGS)

Mitch, and the others,

This is re: a pronounced face 'appearing' in one of the 30000 some photos from one of the Mars Medium Altitude orbiters.

Mitch, Yes, the photo I sent you earlier today 'is' from the NASA site (enclosed).

Someone first went in to the 30000 photos and then from there cut and pasted the MJB Coffee 'man' in the moon graphic. Originally drawn in 1861, it has taken a lesser and lesser role in MJB advertising.

The photo enclosed is blown at 500% and you can see the cut and paste clearly as well as turning your head to the right and see the face.

Via Unix this is fairly easy to do.

I sent the graphic enclosed to Sherry at JPL for her to go in and fix the photo that has been fiddled with.

If you go to the JPL PDS site and you can see the odd fakery of it at first glance.

Then, after you blow it up, you can see the cut and paste.

Here it is again from the NASA JPL site:

http://www-pdsimage.wr.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/panpic.cgi?DATA_SET_NAME=mdim.des&PROJECTION=SIMP&RESOLUTION=256&SIZE=4&LAT=9.500000&LON=-8.500000

The site above you have mentioned, Mitch, is not a 'mirror' site of NASA's JPL PDS site.

It is a site that links back to the KKSamuri Site which is here: http://users.flnet.com/~ksamurai/newface.html

You all should nip this in the bud, or its gonna be, "here we go again".

And before anyone out there goes crazy over this, this has occurred hundreds of times in hacking a site, dropping in the photo, and evaccing from the place with a window washer to hide your DNS and IP tracks.

This has Terry Tim Rogers written all over it. Here is the Unix command for entering a gov./cgi.image site: user: gov pass: sci command:

bin/calc/bin~graphic.go/back~mdim/DATA>(add url) then: vect/.bin.ftp.des.256/bin/calc/frop/go~/

I use Apple's version of Unix, called A/ux to get in, and Anarchie Pro or OTOOLS as the client.

And you can go here for the humor side of NASA/ JPL explaining about 'faces' which is absolutely hilarious.

Read it all.

Rob Walsh of USGS actually mentions in humor about adding your own images.

Great stuff. http://www-pdsimage.wr.usgs.gov/PDS/public/mapmaker/faq.htm

Re: New Mars Face /msg

This is an offical news alert from the S4 Database (http://area51.icom.net) regarding the new mars face located at LAT 9.5 / LON -8.5

We reported earlier with some revervation a new face being discovered on Mars. Our skepticism was due in part to the near photographic clearity of said face. We just recived confirmation about one hour ago that the face has been foudn on a NASA image from the USGS mirror of the Mars Global Surveyor Image archive.

We have mirrored that file, a screen capture of the file on the archive, and a full copy of the related site.

For more infomation on this developing story please refer to http://area51.icom.net/moon/mars/new_face/ and stay tuned to Ground Zero Radio(http://www.clydelewis.com) as they were the first radio show to report the story.

As always we are indebted to Mitch Battros at Earth Changes TV (http://www.earthchangesmedia.com) for the Critical information FYI on this (he was the first to report it!).

There are more than two faces on Mars...05/03/99

There are more than two! I've been researching Mars for anomalies, also. Using the Viking PDS Armchair Astronaut Map, I've found *many* structures, anomalies and faces. Attached is one of three *very clear* faces, I found in while searching. This one has teeth and what looks to be some kind of laurel wreath around his head. I found it in the Syrtis Major Planum region. The other ones are in following emails. I thought, maybe, you'd be interested in taking a look at them. Elaine Lucas

This is from 24x177. It's a bit less clear than the other two. The thing that really stands out on this photo is the *huge* cross shaped structure!

Found at 31x106, abutting Alba Patera, to the east.

Other Links and notes on Second Face on Mars...05/03/99

Mitch... The unique thing about the Face I found is that the sun was reasonably low on the horizon when the shot was taken. My guess is the sun was about 15º above the horizon, and in plan, the sun source was at about 2:00 o'clock on the image. And in my opinion, the darkness of the original image can be used to great advantage.

I created an animated gif that could possibly represent the way the face might look as the sun goes down. Also in this animation, I stretched the data in a couple of frames to brighten it even more...This provides us an opportunity to view the perceived shadow lines that could be formed by the structure of the face itself.

Initial results indicate the structure is not simply chicken scratchings on the ground, it has relief. The bridge of the nose is very clearly defined and has a sharp shadow, the eye sockets are defined by shadow too, and as expected, the chin gets dark first because it's lower and opposite the light source...

I'd like Dr. Mark Carlotto to study this new face and actually run it through a true 'shape from shading' exercise using his sophisticated software and methods to see what he comes up with.

Regards, Terry ~ aka kksamurai

Second Face On Mars, Let's Keep A Little Humor...05/02/99

by John-Michael

Dear Mitch,

I applaud you on this stance- I have always felt strongly (positive) about the original picture of the face on Mars, have no trouble with the idea of other cultures visiting us from elsewhere in the universe and was most concerned when that last explorer suddenly "blacked out" right at the moment when it would have confirmed the face on Mars from the closest distance ever but this last post from you is too close to seeing faces in clouds.

So after reading about Mars' new face, I went and made myself a bowl of oatmeal and found that with only fair skill with a teaspoon and a digital camera I could find similar archaeological anomalies right in my own little breakfast bowl!

My wife then asked me with a worried expression on her face "gee john-michael - what concerns me is WHO do you think BUILT that face in the oatmeal?" She then went on to ask me if I had ever experienced any missing time during times when I go to make my oatmeal. I said no, not that I could remember.

Not satisfied with my answer, she offered to regress me so that I could free myself from any trauma endured at the hands of grainerestrials but I turned her down because I just couldn't have faced it and really dealt with it if I had found out that a chip had been implanted in my tongue which would have explained why everything has tasted like oatmeal ever since that night there was a bright light in my kitchen around 3am and...but that's another story.

anyway - thanks for all your sends

Is There A Second Face On Mars?...05/02/99

Hi Folks,

I have been sent a new find of a second face on Mars. I have asked the person who discovered this anomaly to tell us a little bit about himself. (see below). Mr. Terry James states he has been researching NASA photos for the past five years. His special interest is on the planet Mars. He discovered the second face anomaly on April 7th 1999.

Terry James : I've been studying and "hunting" planetary anomalies for about 5 years now. I have interests in architecture, archaeology, astronomy, and ancient art & sculpture. I am 50 years old and was trained as an Architect although I never registered. I've been involved in large commercial, industrial and institutional construction since 1972 and I specialize in the Design-Build method of project delivery.

I am not a nut. he he he...If you've taken the time to visit some of my websites and BBS's you'll note that I have a busy time of things.

In my latest venture I managed to get an admission from our civilian space agency NASA that there are in fact at least two people on staff who are authorized to classify planetary imaging data and have done so for some (unknown) time....Did you know that? Interesting isn't it?

I don't know what you want to know specifically about me but maybe the above information will help you.

More Evidence of Life on Mars...04/13/99

(ENN) by John Roach David S. McKay claims to have found further evidence of life on Mars. McKay is the NASA scientist who, in 1996, announced that a Martian meteorite found in Antarctica contained proof of life on the red planet.

At a NASA conference held this past March, McKay announced that two additional meteorites contain features that resemble Earth bacteria. One of the meteorites is about 1.3 billion years old and fell to Earth in 1911 near Nakhla, Egypt. The other is approximately 165 million years old and landed near Shergotty, India, in 1865.

"Nakhla contains variable concentrations of tiny round to ovoid objects which can plausibly be interpreted as bacterial cells in various states of mineralization," wrote McKay in the abstract to his conference presentation.

WHAT MAKES THE NEW FINDINGS CREDIBLE?

During his presentation at the NASA conference, McKay used photographs to emphasize the similarity between the fossil-like structures in the Nakhla meteorite and those seen in terrestrial formations.

McKay said that the round and egg-shaped units (see photograph above) represent the mineralized remains of bacterial cell bodies and are similar to some mineralized bacterial cells grown in basalt microcosms along the U.S. Pacific Northwest's Columbia River.

McKay admitted that he has yet to prove that the round and egg-shaped formations are indeed bacterial -- or even that the formations are from Mars. The formations' Martian origins may be confirmed by analysis of soil samples from Mars. NASA expects to retrieve such samples sometime before 2010.

Europa and Richard Hoagland ... 2/10/99

I have been constructing a website during the last several months. Although it is not yet finished, I have decided that there is already enough there to start letting various people know of its existence. Since I am a mathematician, most of the website is concerned with Mathematics. But one part of it is concerned with Europa and another part, indirectly, with Cydonia. I am sending this message to people who might be interested in those topics. The website's address is: http://www.math.washington.edu/~greenber/personal.html

Concerning Europa, I have written a very long, historical account of the ideas that Europa might have an ocean and that life might possibly develop in such an environment. In my article, I discuss quite a number of the papers, etc. about these ideas, and so a reader can learn something about the underlying science, especially by following the extensive links that I've found.

You will undoubtedly find it strange to see such an article on a mathematician's website. I first got involved in this topic early in 1997 after hearing Richard Hoagland mention (many times)on the Art Bell Show that he was the first person to propose the idea that Europa might have an ocean and that life could possibly exist there. I was very doubtful about Hoagland's claim and, after considerable digging, found that my doubt was completely justified. In June,1997, I wrote a letter on this topic and sent copies to quite a few people, including Art Bell, Arthur C. Clarke, Richard Hoagland (of course), and various scientists and journalists. But, unfortunately, Richard Hoagland continued to make his claim of priority and Art Bell never once tried to correct this dishonesty.

Even though my involvement in this topic started in such a negative way, I became fascinated by the topic and decided just a few months ago to expand my letter into an article. It was important to me to turn my efforts into something positive and educational. In addition to the historical article on my website, you will find a brief summary (a fax to Art Bell) and my commentary which ends with a rather interesting quote from a letter that I received from Arthur C. Clarke (in response to the letter mentioned above).

Another section of my site also owes its existence indirectly to Hoagland and what he likes to call the "Geometry of Cydonia." In 1996, I actually tried very hard to convince him that this kind of "mathematical" evidence (for the idea that certain objects in Cydonia are artificial) was fallacious. This turned out to be a completely futile effort. I was very disturbed by the fact that, after ignoring the rather strong argument that I presented to him, he continued to promote this kind of evidence, apparently with great success at fooling people with it. And so I decided that it might be useful to discuss the whole topic of random coincidences, and that led to my including a section on my website which I call "The Power of Randomness." You might be surprised at what you find there.

For more than two years I have tried to challenge some of Richard Hoagland's claims. I had hoped naively that Art Bell would have enough respect and loyalty for his audience to allow the kind of substantive, well-founded criticism that I have to offer to somehow be aired on his show. That proved to be impossible. I now will take a different route in expressing my criticism of Richard Hoagland, and also of Art Bell's intolerably lackadaisical attitude towards the dishonesty of some of his guests. This will be in the form of a letter to an individual named Michael Bara, who has written an article entitled "Orwell and the Internet." Even though this rather distorted and offensive article deserves no response, I have decided to write a response. Mr.Bara has, inadvertently, provided me with an ideal opportunity to explain in detail why I am a critic of Richard Hoagland. My letter to Mr.Bara will be quite long, since it will represent two years of experiences. And I certainly will not ignore Art Bell. With just a couple of exceptions, my criticism will deal with issues and events where I have first-hand knowledge. Most of what I have to say is known to only a few people, but hopefully my letter will change that situation.

Since 1996 I have confronted both Richard Hoagland and Art Bell with certain issues that I felt were very important. I have done this in a patient, polite, but extremely persistent way. The choices they made concerning these issues are a reflection of their values. Quite frankly, as I believe my letter will show, their values are abominable.

I have put together a rather long mailing list. My letter to Michael Bara will be sent to the same list. This should happen in about two or three weeks. If you receive two copies of this message, or if you prefer for some reason not to receive my letter, please let me know. Also, I would welcome any comments, suggestions, or constructive criticism of what you find on my website.

Sincerely yours,

Ralph Greenberg
