An email from Art Bell to Robert Stephens ; Roberts response...12/31/98

My God man!, you did not make sense. You totally contradicted yourself. You did NOT discuss the real issues. What the hell happened to you? I have had THOUSANDS of e-mails saying something VERY different.

Art

From: Robert Stephens to Art Bell.

What you read in the beginning of the show is the issue.

I was virtually lucid. Had you moderated I would have 'bailed' Richard out the same time as making him defend his data. I would have been good for your protocol. You took sides and you erred. Now, I believe you will reap that whirlwind.

To promote NOAA's fouled up nexrad firmware without even an explanation or link or data of OLD NOAA postings which are not nexrad (next generation) is stupid. Its not science or anything else. That was the issue. To then base, on glitched NOAA firmware, DoD intent of 'some evil' motion at play then takes the first claim up to insanity at worst, selective irrationality at best. Asked Peter to send the last mail I sent him before the show and that I asked Peter to resend to Richard if he had a way to get in touch with Richard.

Richard has never ever done anything whatsoever to hurt me or write me or in any way to assault or attack me in any fashion. Peter Gersten did, and I offered to pay him to use me. Peter changed

Richard is probably quite serious about the question that vexes us all. My next thing I was going to say on air was that Hoagland is one of the few people who offers the time he does and not one time ever does he try to screw people by charging money for his work like others. That speaks for Richard Hoagland quite strongly for character. Period!

Richard Hoagland Data

1. His data is flawed I will verify this claim is any venue in any court on Earth, if he so wishes.
2. His data against NASA on lies is pathological with intent to do harm to people (like me) who are innocent. NASA can't sue. I can. And why I will never work civil service ever! I am free to run 'me' without having to answer to a bunch of government non-sense.
3. My mails I quoted (of people I haven't a clue who they are) are fact by those that have written them. I have them. I have resent them and I ask why Hoagland would propose these things.

Thus:

1. Asteroid on Hawaii. Where is this data from. That is not a bad question.
2. nuke Washington. Where is this data from. That is not a bad question.
3. 19.5 and 33. False claims. Where is this data from. That is not a bad question.
4. Turret peak. Had a non 'culture' team mate I got to go up there the whole day and night (ex-seal friend). No nothing up there. Thus, where is this data from. That is not a bad question.
5. Hiding news of new planet in solar system. No. Where is this data from. That is not a bad question.
6. NASA lies. Where is this data from. That is not a bad question. NASA has lied one time. I was going to reveal that.

Summation

I was not going TO HURT RICHARD!
I was going to QUESTION HIS DATA IN HARD FASHION THE WAY I HAVE TO DEFEND ME WHEN I MAKE STATEMENTS ON SHUTTLE HARDWARE FAILURE AND HAVE TO DEFEND MYSELF WITH FACTS AND VALIDITY---THAT IS ALL!

Richard as a person is not the issue. His pathos in stating data that is false and can be proven as such, is.

What's the Point then Robert?

Get Richard, like Peter, using his civilian experience, to then head in the right direction for what in the world is happening to us. Those sources are, to begin, the NRO and OIA.

ME

I have been invited to appear on 5 shows since you cut me off. From light shows like Earth Changes to PBS. I will divulge exactly what was done to me by you on these shows.

It was in error.

Richard's data is misguided and headed off into areas that are groundless. Re-read your man's anonymous mail, if it is real, and study what he portends.

That is the issue.

I am sorry you had to cut me off. If your supporters endorse this behavior then more power to you and your show's format. My data can be released elsewhere This culture is not my venue. I was asked to enter. The data I have offered like NORAD /Fence is new. The powers that be have had 80 days to tell me to cease and desist. They have not.

I am not the enemy.

I am just as busy as Richard Hoagland. Yet, if I'm going to run my mouth then I will post my phone and email so people can grill me on my data. That is why I took my issues that still remain with Hoagland on the net in open fashion, not attacking him, but his data, since he is unreachable.

Why Attack Richard then?

Because he is the loudest child. He writes outlandish letters to NASA, NSA, DoD, etc, and then can't figure why the vice of information is shutting down tighter. The loudest voice, then, needs to be corrected or shut up or sent on a new mission that is fruitful. He lost his accreditation from NASA headquarters because he lied to NASA and he is hated at the agency for his lies, understandably. Facts, Art. Call 'em!

Again, sorry you had to cut me off. Don't ever try and twist your statement to incriminate me or other guests again. Stupid. It was you that got caught in your own bullshit since you didn't even know how contracting works and neither did all knowing Hoagland. Think! You guys screwed yourselves. Fine.

I will now let the culture, your followers, judge how incoherent I am. We will see how many other 'shows' cut me off too. None have so far. Just you.

The public will surely judge now. 20 million people. Think.

Behold.

Richard Hoagland exposed, Art Bell taken to task...12/31/98

Last night on the Art Bell Show (12/30/98), Richard Hoagland and Robert Stephens NASA consultant were discussing Pegasus as well as other items Mr. Hoagland claims to have discovered. When Mr. Stephens began to challenge Richard Hoagland with contradictory information, Art Bell "cut" Robert Stephens off the air, stating "This interview is over". Many have reported that Art Bell favors Richard Hoagland and appears to protect him from scrutiny. This is very different then the time Art Bell went after Courtney Brown during the Hale-Bopp debacle. At the time, Courtney Brown announced and produced photos of a "Companion" to Hale-Bopp which was meant to be a space craft. Art Bell found contradictory information and proceeded to "Attack" Courtney Brown. Then Art Bell solicited Whitley Strieber to partner up with him, and the two of them proceeded to gang up on Courtney and destroy his reputation.

What is different now regarding Richard Hoagland's assertion of having the "Smoking Gun" regarding Pegasus as well as other anomalies Richard Hoagland claims to be the pioneer of discovering. You make the call.

Below is an email from Robert A.M. Stephens stating his view of last nights showdown.

ART BELL AND RICHARD HOAGLAND CUT ME OFF AT 2:04 AM MST ON 12-31-1998 WHEN I ASKED ART TO ASK ME QUESTIONS FROM RICHARD SINCE RICHARD WAS INCOHERENT AND WOULD NOT ASK ME ANY MORE QUESTIONS.

THEY WOULD NOT ANSWER THEIR CHARGES OR THEIR OWN QUESTIONS.

I HAD AGREED WITH EVERYTHING THEY SAID.

I HAD AGREED WITH ALL CHARGES MADE.

I HAD POINTED OUT THAT HOAGLAND WAS FINE. HIS DATA IS A LIE.

I HAD TRIED TO BEGIN MY CHALLENGE OF HOAGLANDS DATA WHICH IS A LIE.

THEY CUT ME OFF.

These men are somehow part of a disinformation campaign to keep the truth from getting out in normal, real, science based fashion. Both appear to be fraudulent and charlatans and I have contacted the legal councils required in such a case.

Storm Sparks Major Nuclear Alert At Plant...12/30/98

A FULL-SCALE emergency was declared at a Scots nuclear station when fierce winds knocked out the power to cool its reactors. Last night, the plant remained shut after bosses pressed the alarm button on Sunday. They couldn't restart the back-up generators, vital to keep the reactors' two cores from overheating.

Frightened staff were called from their homes and battled for five hours to manually try to reset the safety systems before the cores went "critical". A boss was also rushed under police escort to Hunterston B, in Ayrshire, it was claimed. The astonishing situation - sparking fears of a Chernobyl-type reactor meltdown - happened after storms took out the national grid twice in the space of 12 hours. The first time - at 11pm on Saturday - the emergency back-up generators in the nuclear plant switched on automatically. But there were not enough staff on duty to manually reset them before the grid went down a second time at 11am on Sunday - leaving plant bosses helpless.

An investigation is being carried out by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. A spokeswoman said last night: "Two of our inspectors were called in as soon as the alarm was raised on Sunday and our investigations continue. "There was no power to the system that cools the reactor for a number of hours and we do consider this a serious incident." It's a major embarrassment for Scottish Nuclear, who claim their safety systems cover all eventualities.

Roseanna Cunningham, the SNP's environment spokeswoman, said: "Holiday period or not, you can't afford to take risks with nuclear energy. "Questions must be answered on why Hunterston B was understaffed." Earlier this year, the back-up at Dounreay, in Caithness, failed when a digger cut power cables. That disaster was one of the reasons Scots Secretary Donald Dewar ordered the plant be closed.

A Hunterston worker, who asked not to be named, said the situation had been terrifying. He said: "The sirens were sounding all over the plant and there were police, fire and ambulance crew arriving. We didn't know what was going on. "It is the most serious incident I have ever seen." Kevin Dunion, director of Friends of the Earth Scotland, called for a full inquiry into the role of the management. He said people would be "astounded" to find fail safe procedures hadn't been worked out for the holiday. A spokeswoman for Scottish Nuclear said at no time was any member of the public or staff at risk. Meanwhile, after days of bad weather, Hogmanay revellers have been warned to wrap up to avoid tragedy at this year's huge outdoor parties. The alert comes after Perth teenager Sally Greig froze to death walking home from a festive party.

Ambulance services are on standby amid fears that temperatures could plunge to as low as 2C (34F). Police urged party-goers to make sure they wear layers of warm clothes on Edinburgh's streets. Around 150,000 people are expected to crowd the city-centre party, which is ticket-only. Weather experts say Edinburgh will be colder than Glasgow, where temperatures will reach around 3C (36F). Last night, north Scotland was battered by more storms, with the islands, Aberdeen and Dundee being worst hit with winds of up to 65mph. And more than 4000 families were still without electricity yesterday as power bosses faced calls to quit. Today, the weather will be dull across Scotland, with strong winds, particularly in the north-east. It will be mild everywhere.

The cause of the Problem (Y2K). Dates to follow...12/29/98

Received this information from a major bank VP and thought it may be of interest.
by: Jonathan David Boyne
email: boyne@hawaii.edu

Inability of a computer application to recognize, in an unambiguous manner, a specific date primarily, but not always, because of the use of two position date fields. Concerns center on the following dates:

April 9, 1999 - (this is day 99 in the year 99 for systems using the Julian Calendar or 9999 file termination).

September 9, 1999 -(this is 9999 for systems using the Gregorian Calendar or file termination).

January 1st, 2000 - (two position year field may cause system to think it is January 1, 1900).

February 29, 2000 - (leap year divisable by 100 and 400, Years divisable by 100 are not leap years).

January 3, 2000 -(it's the first business day of the year).

January 10, 2000 -(first day to require a seven-digit date field (1/10/2000. Old systems were designed with limited space for the date field).

October 10, 2000 -(First day to require an eight-digit datefield (10/10/2000).

December 31, 2000 and January 1, 2001 - Some failures may happen because many programs might be inadequately programmed to close out the year.

September 8, 2001 -(UNIX systems idenify this date as 999,999,999 - this is also used to identify and end of file situation.

Sun set to throw celestial tantrum...12/27/98

By Keay Davidson
EXAMINER SCIENCE WRITER
Sunday, December 27, 1998

Solar storms could wreak global havoc.

If you thought San Francisco's mega-blackout was bad, just wait until mid-2000, when our old friend the sun turns against us.

Like Norman Bates in "Psycho," the sun goes a little crazy now and then by hurling million-degree fireballs and star-sized, electrically charged clouds toward Earth. Its next celestial fit is likely in mid-2000 -- possibly even next summer -- and could bring continent-sized power outages, global cell-phone screw-ups and other techno-mishaps that could make the Dec. 8 blackout look like a burned-out refrigerator light bulb.

"We're more vulnerable (to such electrical cataclysms) than we used to be because of the increasing interconnection of society," warns solar physicist Don J. Michels of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. He is one of many scientists who study the sun's 11-year bouts of manic-depressive behavior. Consider the new power grids used by deregulated utilities seeking cheap electric power. The lines extend thousands of miles, linking Canadian hydroelectric dams to Southern California. "The bigger they are, the harder they fall," goes an old saying -- and nothing illustrates that better than these super-long power lines, which could go as dead as dried noodles during a big solar "storm."

The results? Imagine being stuck in a Muni tunnel for hours or eating melted ice cream from an on-the-blink fridge -- all because the sun has just undergone one of its periodic nervous breakdowns. Its next peak of violence -- technically known as "solar maximum" -- is expected in mid-2000. But the breakdown has already started: "In the last two years, you can easily see an increase in solar activity.

The (solar) magnetic field lines are breaking apart," says Steve Hill, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. NASA and the Defense Department are scrambling to launch satellites that can give advance warning of incoming solar storms. The military is especially concerned because of the possible failure of reconnaissance satellites -- the ones that watch Saddam Hussein's troops, for example -- during a military engagement. Other scientists hope to better understand the sun's structure and behavior by launching satellites such as HESSI, the High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, now being designed at UC-Berkeley. Planned for launch in mid-2000, during Solar Maximum, HESSI will study X-rays and gamma rays from solar flares and "coronal mass ejection's," vast clouds of ionized (electrically charged) particles, says Jay Trimble, HESSI integration test manager.

On reaching Earth, the particles warp Earth's magnetic field. The field gyrations induce electrical currents in power lines that can short-circuit them. The longer the line, the greater the electrical surge -- so long-distance power lines are especially vulnerable. A consortium of scientific agencies is trying to spread the word about the coming threat from what they call "solar weather." At the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco this month, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Boulder, Colo.-based Space Science Institute and others distributed a slick, colorful brochure that begins: "THE FORECAST? Look for Storms, Gale-Force Winds, and Plasma Blobs." ("Plasma" refers to clouds of electrons and ionized particles.) A harbinger of what may come during Solar Maximum occurred in May, when a powerful solar storm tripled and quadrupled electrical currents in the ionosphere, the thick envelope of ionized air overhead, says researcher Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado. The greater the electrical current, the greater the risk to sensitive electronic gear, communications systems, power lines and other societal infrastructure. The Dec. 8 outage, which afflicted much of the Peninsula and nearly all of San Francisco, was caused by humans, not by the sun. But "that is the kind of thing that makes the concern about solar events seem real," Michels says. "When one substation goes down, it ripples through the whole system."

The solar breakdown might come sooner than expected -- perhaps as early as the middle of next year, says U.S. Air Force scientist Richard C. Altrock. He expects the solar storms to peak in mid-1999, a year earlier than other forecasts, based on his observations of a solar phenomenon whimsically known as the "Rush to the Poles," he said at the American Geophysical Union meeting.

At a solar observatory in Arizona, Altrock has observed solar gases rich in ionized iron steadily flowing toward the sun's north and south poles. Such flows have preceded the last two solar maximums by an average of 15 to 17 months, he says. The current "rush" began in February 1997, he says, suggesting solar maximum could come as early as the summer of 1999. Whenever the sun reaches maximum violence, he adds, the show is starting: "Already we're starting to (detect) quite large (solar) flares and mass ejection's that are impacting our Earth."

The FFIEC (Federal Financial Examination Council) issuing a year 2000 contingency plan...12/27/98

Mitch, I have a report I think you should read and post on your site. We've been told time and time by our government and the banks that they would be 100 % complaint and there would be no problems with the banking industry. Well, answer me this question? Why is the FFIEC (Federal Financial Examination Council) issuing a year 2000 contingency plan for the banks. I have already, but I would recommend people pulling some or most of there money out of the banks before it is to late. Even if Y2K is not that bad, I predict the the media (after they've dragged the Clinton trial out) will whip the American people into a frenzy & cause a bank run by August 1999. I'm glad I've spent the last 2 years preparing.

Here is the FFIEC Web site - I suggest you read it ASAP. http://www.ffiec.gov/y2kqa.htm

Dear Mitch,

One of our brothers here at the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) is a visionary and locutionist. The other day, Our Lady (the Blessed Virgin Mary) told him to tell me that I need to get a cellular phone, because soon the phone lines are going to be down.

CELLULAR PHONES USE INTERCONNECTIONS TO THE PUBLIC SWITCHED TELEPHONE NETWORK TO COMMUNICATE WITH NON CELLULAR TELEPHONES. SO, IF YOU INTEND TO COMMUNICATE WITH ANY ONE WHO IS NOT A CELLULAR USER ON THE SAME SYSTEM AND "THE PHONE LINES GO DOWN" YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE YOUR CALL. IF THE DISASTER IS MORE SEVERE THAN THE DISABLING OF PHONE LINES AND EXTENDS TO THE CENTRAL SWITCHING OFFICES YOU MAY NOT EVEN BE ABLE TO COMPLETE A CELLULAR TO CELLULAR CALL BECAUSE MANY OF THE CENTRAL OFFICES (INCLUDING CELLULAR) ARE COLOCATED. ALL THIS MEANS YOU PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO GET TO YOUR ISP VIA CELLULAR PHONE DURING A COMMUNICATIONS EMERGENCY.

What I am wondering, Mitch, is cell phones operate through microwave towers and via satellite, right?

Our Lady says it is necessary for me to get one of these (in fact yesterday a donor gave me the deposit to go ahead and get it. It is charging for the first time right next to me even as I type). So we can still do email via cell phones.

Do you happen to know if there are servers for internet connections via cell phone suppliers? Because if phone lines are down, and I have to dial in to a GTE phone, it will not answer, right? There will have to be another way to access a server, and I am wondering if this could be through microwave. Any ideas?

A DIRECT CONNECTION VIA MICROWAVE TO THE ISP IS VIABLE TECHNICALLY.

IT WOULD, HOWEVER, BE COSTLY FROM BOTH THE INITIAL INVESTMENT AND VERY HIGH MONTHLY FEES BY BOTH THE TELETRANSPORT PROVIDER AND INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER.

I am sending a photo of the computer/internet device/cell phone, all off the internet. What do you think?

With God's blessings, this Christmas season,

Father Richard Gant

Robstown, Texas

YOU ARE TWICE AS VULERNABLE TO OUTAGES WITH CELLULAR COMPARED WITH WIRELINE ISP CONNECTIONS. NOW THAT I HAVE RAINED ON YOUR PARADE LET'S TRY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. SEVERAL POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS;

1. SET UP THE LINK TO THE ISP VIA MICROWAVE OR SHARED FIBER

2. DIVIRSIFY WITH EXISTING ISP TECHNOLOGY

A. CONVENTIONAL MODEM VIA TELEPHONE LINES

B. CABLE MODEM VIA THE CABLE TV OPERATORS

C. INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE FIBER AVAILABILITY FROM THE GAS CO (I UNDERSTAND THEY ARE INSTALLING FIBER WITH NEW GAS INSTALLATIONS)

D. OBTAIN A HAM LICENSE AND USE PACKET RADIO TO ACCESS THE INTERNET.

ANY OF THESE METHODS COULD BE IMPAIRED BY TELEPHONE LINE OUTAGES BUT WITH SUFFICIENT DIVERSITY A REASONABLE LEVEL OF CAPABILITY COULD BE RETAINED UNDER ALL BUT THE MOST DIRE CONDITIONS. IN CATASTROPHIC CONDITIONS PERHAPS EMAIL WOULD NOT BE AS IMPORTANT AS "OUTSIDE" COMMUNICATIONS. FOR THAT I WOULD RELY ON HAM RADIO. I HOPE THIS HELPS,

ART

Volcano erupts in Iceland...12/21/98

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) - A volcano beneath Europe's largest glacier in southern Iceland has erupted, sending clouds of steam and ash 32,000 feet into the air, according to news reports. Scientists detected volcanic activity in the southern part of the Vatnajokull glacier Friday, in an area called Grimsvotn, the same spot as a spectacular eruption two years ago, according to the Iceland Review Web site. Iceland's National Radio Service said the eruption was less serious than the one in 1996, which damaged roads and bridges in the south of Iceland.

1998 world temperature expected to be highest ever recorded...12/18/98

(AP) Climate change causing droughts, fires, floods, hurricanes GENEVA, Earth’s average temperature in 1998 is projected to be the highest since record keeping began in 1860, the U.N. weather agency said Thursday. THE GLOBAL AVERAGE for the year is expected to be 1 degree above the long-term average of 59 degrees, said the World Meteorological Association. It will be the 20th consecutive year during which the earth’s surface temperature has been above normal. New temperature records have been set in each of the past 18 months. The association outlined some of the more significant weather phenomena during the past year. In the United States, spring and summer heat and drought caused massive wildfire outbreaks in Florida and damage to crops from the southern plains to the Southeast. April to June was the driest period in 104 years in Florida, Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico, and May to June were the warmest on record in those states. The organization says heat waves caused the deaths of more than 100 people in Russia in June and great loss of life in India in May. Widespread drought affecting huge areas of Brazil also induced extensive wildfires.

Australia evacuates 600 for cyclone...12/11/98

PERTH, Australia (AP) - The last of 600 people were evacuated Friday from the sparsely populated Dampier peninsula in northwest Australia as Cyclone Thelma's highly destructive winds bore down on the coastline. "About 400 of them self-evacuated to Broome and Derby last night, and 200 are in a convoy to Broome as we speak," State Emergency Service Broome region assistant manager Alan Gale said. The category five cyclone packing 185 mph winds near its destructive core - the most severe on record to assault Australia - was brushing past Western Australia's northern-most tip last night.

State of emergency in Russian city...12/8/98

MOSCOW (AP) - Officials in Russia's Pacific port city of Vladivostok declared a state of emergency because half the buildings in the city are without heat as temperatures drop below freezing, a news report said. Schools and day-care centers have been closed, and hospitals will soon be evacuated if the situation doesn't improve in the city, 4,000 miles east of Moscow, the Interfax news agency reported Monday. Making matters worse, the city was inundated early Monday by a major snow storm, Interfax said. City officials blame local energy supplier Dalenergo for the shortage. They say Dalenergo is poorly managed.

Only half of U.S. counties have 2000 computer plan...12/8/98

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - It will cost the United States' 3,069 counties about $1.7 billion to fix millennium computer problems, but only half have started the job, the National Association of Counties said on Tuesday. The association based its warnings on a survey of 500 counties in 46 states. "Exactly half responded that a strategic plan was in place to address Y2K issues," the group said in its survey.

San Francisco hit with power outage...12/8/98

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A citywide blackout cut off power to more than a third of a million customers Tuesday, halting trains, planes and cars, closing shops and schools and leaving pedestrians scrambling. John Tremayne, a Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman for the Central Valley, said the outage happened when a transmission substation in San Mateo County experienced a drop in power for unknown reasons. That caused two gas-powered electrical generation facilities to drop offline. Power went out just after 8 a.m. Electricity was beginning to be restored to the 372,000 affected customers by midmorning, but the work was expected to last into the late afternoon, said a PG&E spokesman.

How to View the Geminids Meteor Shower...12/5/98

The meteor shower is active from December 6 until December 19. The night of December 13/morning of December 14 is the best time to watch. Geminids meteors can be seen anytime after 10 p.m. (PST), when the constellation Gemini is well above the horizon, but the best time to look is during the early morning hours between about 2 a.m. and dawn. That's when the local sky is pointing directly into the Geminid meteor stream.

Gemini rises about 08:00 p.m. local time at mid-latitudes in the Northern hemisphere. The radiant of the Geminid shower is located near Castor, one of the two bright stars in Gemini (the other bright star is Pollux). To find the constellation at 2:00 a.m., go outside and face south. Castor and Pollux will appear approximately 45 degrees above the horizon. Earlier in the evening, from 10:00 p.m. until midnight, Gemini will be about 30 degrees above the horizon in the southeast.

You won't need binoculars or a telescope, the naked eye is usually best for seeing meteors which often streak more than 45 degrees across the sky. The field of view of most binoculars and telescopes is simply too narrow for good meteor observations.

Experienced meteor observers suggest the following viewing strategy: Dress warmly as the mid-December nights are likely to be cold in the Northern hemisphere. Bring a reclining chair, or spread a thick blanket over a flat spot of ground. Lie down and look up somewhat toward the south. Meteors can appear in any part of the sky, although their trails will tend to point back toward the radiant.

The Geminids Meteror Shower Starts December 6th...12/4/98

(NASA) The Mysterious Geminid Meteors: On the night of December 13, 1998, fragments of a mysterious object called 3200 Phaethon will plunge into Earth's atmosphere and produce a beautiful display of shooting stars. The Geminids may be the only meteor shower caused by an asteroid, or it could be a comet in disguise. The article includes more information about 3200 Phaethon, and tips on how to observe the Geminids.

The shower officially begins on December 6th, but it doesn't peak until the night of the 13th. Unlike the Giacobinids and Leonids, the Geminid's broad maximum lasts nearly a full day, so observers around the globe have a good chance to see the show. At its peak the Geminids are expected to produce about one shooting star every 30 seconds.

Most well known meteor showers, like the Perseids and Leonids, are old. They've been observed for hundreds or even thousands of years. The earliest record of a modern-day meteor shower is probably a notation in Chinese annals dated 36 AD, regarding the Perseids, where it is said that "more than 100 meteors flew thither in the morning."

The Geminids are a different story. The first Geminid meteors suddenly appeared in the mid-1800's. Those early showers were unimpressive, boasting a mere 10-20 shooting stars per hour. Since then, however, the Geminids have grown in intensity until today it is one of the most spectacular annual showers. In 1996, the last time the Geminids appeared in a dark moon-less sky, observers saw as many as 110 per hour. Sky-watchers with clear skies should see at least that many this year if the Geminids continue to intensify.

Colorado State Patrol Y2K Preparations...12/4/98

by Linda, Arvada

I do not normally like to deal with this kind of news because the negativity seems to feed upon itself and grow even bigger. However, I feel obligated to share this with you now.

My sister-in-law is highly placed in the Colorado State Patrol for about a year now (maybe a little less). My niece just came over tonight totally freaked out about what her step mother has told her.

Special meetings and training sessions this week with the Colorado State Patrol. They have been told to expect riots and unrest with the Y2K problem. They are using "new" weapons and will take "stronger" measures than ever before used with riot control. I asked my niece if they would institute marshall law (she's only 17 and didn't know what that was). She will go home and ask more questions.

The Colorado State Patrol is being told to go home and store food and water and make sure that their families can either find safe havens or know to batten down the hatches (sounds like marshall law to me). I will see if my niece can "borrow" any of the literature being passed out by the State Patrol, but believe me folks, if this type of planning is going on here in liberal Colorado, you had better check into what is going down in your state. Sean David Morton predicts that the Y2K bug will hit New York City with its fiscal year in April of 99. I believe that the rest of America is looking to see what happens in New York in April and will take their cues from that.

Expect the worst and pray for the best. I believe that with faith anything is possible, but that perhaps we had best be prepared for this one.

Meanwhile, if you can think of appropriate questions for me to ask my niece, please send them to me. I will broadcast answers as they become apparent and will only send information that I believe is accurate.

God Bless,

Linda, Arvada, CO

U.S. bankers fear mass exodus of withdrawls...11/20/98

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Should you withdraw all your money from the bank late next year because of the Year 2000 computer problem? Banking industry representatives told reporters Friday that massive withdrawals would be "foolish," citing the risk of theft, fire and the interest earnings foregone. Banks argue that they will be ready for the date change, citing their consistent rating by experts as among the top industries in preparedness and their existing contingency plans for floods, hurricanes and fires. Automatic teller machines, credit card purchases and direct deposits to bank accounts from employers and social security will continue to work, they said.

U.S. military braces for meteor attack...11/15/98

( CNN) On Tuesday, the Earth will experience the most intense meteor shower in years as the planet passes though a trail of comet debris. While civilians around the world are waiting to enjoy the show put on by the shooting stars, the U.S. military is bracing for star wars. That's because while the Earth's atmosphere protects the planet itself from the flying debris, satellites in orbit are vulnerable to the cloud of sand-sized meteors traveling 100 times faster than speeding bullets.

Meteor storm could affect U.S. military satellites...11/13/98

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A hail of tiny meteors could "sand-blast" military satellites next week, but an Air Force expert said Thursday no catastrophic events were expected that would affect U.S. operations in the Gulf. "We're rating the threat to spacecraft as elevated but not serious, so we're not expecting to lose any service during the storm next Tuesday," Air Force Major Perry Nouis of the U.S. Space Command said. The threat is posed by a Leonid meteor storm, which is expected to bombard Earth's upper atmosphere for about 10 hours on Nov. 17. The vast majority of the mini-meteors will burn up as they go through Earth's atmosphere, posing no threat to anything on Earth.

Y2K has already begun...11/7/98

(London Telegraph) COMPUTERS have already been affected by the date-change problem.

In Holland, motorists with newly issued bank cards with expiry dates of 00 had them rejected at petrol stations.

A Swedish woman received a letter informing her of the various schools on offer when she reached 10. She was, in fact, born in 1890.

A tin of corned beef from Marks & Spencer was rejected on the ground that the food was 96 years out of date.

A date roll-over check on a power station led to its shut-down within 20 seconds. The fault was traced to a flue stack temperature sensor that was programmed to minimise fluctuations over time, using the date to make calculations.

A computer clock set to 2000 at Chrysler Motors in America shut down the security system and refused to let staff out.

A sewage treatment plant in America found that in 2000, valve-control systems would have released untreated sewage into the rivers.

During a test in an American nuclear power station, the device that controlled the depth of the fuel rod in the core began to oscillate because the air-conditioning system in the control room failed and the temperature rose.

America's Social Security Administration tried to set up a payment schedule that ran beyond the end of the present century. However, the computer system could not process it.

For almost six months last year, Visa had to stop issuing cards with expiry dates in 2000 for fear that they would be rejected.

Local governments fearing widespread disruptions due to Y2K...11/4/98

Fearing widespread disruptions in government services, U.S. accounting-rule makers are requiring state and local governments to disclose what they are doing to fix year 2000 computer problems in their annual financial statements. Since state and local governments were not required to make any disclosures about their year-2000 fixes until now, there is no telling how widespread the problem really is, and information is scanty.

HE NEW RULE, which went into effect this week, says state and local governments must report the amount of money and resources they have committed to fix the year-2000 problem, which occurs when a computer using old software thinks the year 2000 is 1900.

As the end of the millennium nears, more attention in the private and public sectors is being turned to the year-2000 problem.

The Government Accounting Standards Board, which enacted the new rule for state and local governments, said that if these governments don’t fix this computer bug in time, it could cause major disruptions in government services, including the performance of power plants, water and sewer systems, law-enforcement agencies and fire departments.

NASA Contractor reports UFO over Montana...11/3/98

RONAN, MONTANA - UFO reported by several hundred witnesses and two local papers over the Mission Valley in western Montana. The sightings began 10-16-1998 and have continued at various intervals and various durations since, up to this report filing of 10-31-1998. They have occurred somewhere between the hours of 2AM and 5AM on non pattern evenings.

The UFO is roughly located above the immense Mission Mountain Range hovering in place at approximately 20,000 feet above sea level and 9,000 feet above the top of the Mission Range. It is reported, as of this writing, by more than 500 witnesses including professional, police personnel who have gone on record, night shift workers, travelers, and locals as well as others in witnessing these unknown-origin craft.

The UFO is reported to be quite large with one continuous red light, a flickering (not blinking) green light and a flickering blue glow that appears under the craft. Outline and shape has been undetermined at this time for the UFO.

The primary locale for observation of the craft has been in and around areas of Polson Montana, a town of 6000 that is located 10 miles north of the town of Ronan. At Ronan a large manufacturing facility is located 2 miles south of the town off highway 93 which runs north and south as does the Mission Range itself and the valley that lays below to the west of the range. At this manufacturing facility many of the night shift have been observing the UFO in the same location and time for the last week or more.

Scott Johnson, night shift foreman for the manufacturing company, has brought his entire night shift outside on the east side of the facility to observe the craft during breaks on various evenings. Mr. Johnson has stated when interviewed, "this is not a vehicle of known origin. Its behavior, its ability to hover as it does, its soundless in that it is strictly visual, all make for something that is not ‘natural’ by our standards of known air vehicles."

On the latest night of observation, 10-30-1998, there were two of the UFOs roughly at the same altitude but approximately 9 miles apart. No one has seen the vehicles appear or have noted when they leave. They are just there when they are noticed and after several hours they are gone.

Conditions in the area have been cloudless, clear, and cold temperatures. There has been no other air craft in the area at the time of the UFOs presence over the entire 700 square mile area of the Mission Valley where the observations have been reported from. The only contingent element is the fact Malstrom Air Force Base is exactly due east of the sighting location for the UFOs at 200 miles.

A further report excerpted from the two local papers that have covered the sightings in depth as well as further observations of the UFOs as they appear in upcoming nights will be posted and filed here accordingly.

As many as 7,000 dead in horrific Central American floods...11/3/98

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (Reuters) - Devastated Honduras appealed for help and set a curfew to stop looters while rescuers in Central America continued digging for as many as 7,000 dead Monday after one of the century's most destructive Atlantic storms. Their economies ruined, impoverished Honduras and Nicaragua bore the brunt of horrific deluges and mudslides from a weeklong rampage by Hurricane Mitch. As many as 1,500 people were buried in mud in the shadows of Nicaragua's Casita volcano. Guatemala, pounded Monday by the tail end of the fourth most powerful Atlantic hurricane on record, declared a state of emergency, and southern Mexico braced for its own punishment as heavy rain began to fall on southern Chiapas state.

Nicaragua fears 1,500 dead in volcano mudslide...11/2/98

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Reuters) - Nicaraguan Defense Minister Pedro Joaquin Chamorro said Sunday as many as 1,500 people may have died in a massive mudslide on the slopes of a volcano in the northwest part of the country. Torrential rains brought the side of the Casita volcano, 55 miles northwest of the capital Managua, crashing down on villages. "We are dealing with a national tragedy which all of Nicaragua is mourning," he said. Chamorro added 1,800 people lived in communities buried by tons of mud, rocks and even lava and only 120 had been rescued. The slopes of the volcano collapsed Saturday, ripped loose by days of almost biblical rains from Mitch, once the fourth most powerful Atlantic hurricane this century.

Army Fears Civil Chaos from Millennium Bug...11/1/98

Report by: Jeff Sallot and John Saunders Ottawa and Toronto.

The Canadian Armed Forces have been ordered to spend the next 14 months preparing for what could be their biggest peacetime deployment -- tens of thousands of troops spread across the country and frigates standing by in major ports -- in case computer problems in 2000 bring civil chaos.

The army is studying everything from the number of flashlights and batteries it will need if power is out for weeks to whether military air-traffic-control field equipment should be set up at civilian airports.

Logistics officers are plotting where to position vehicles, fuel, tents, cots, ration packs and other supplies. Signals officers are trying to figure out how to keep high government officials in communication if commercial systems fail.

Rules for the use of force are being drafted should soldiers have to make arrests or back up police dealing with riots and looting.

As police, fire and other civilian emergency services make their own plans, military commanders have been told that meeting the threat of the Year 2000 bug is their highest priority and will be the focus of all training from January on. Equipment purchases that do not contribute to the effort are to be postponed.

No one knows whether a common programming flaw -- a seemingly small matter of dealing with dates beyond 1999 -- will cause cascading failure in the world's computer systems, knocking out in the dead of a Canadian winter machines that run everything from traffic lights to nuclear reactors.

It could turn out to be one of history's great anticlimaxes, but the armed forces are taking no chances.

The effort is called Operation Abacus, after an ancient Chinese bead-and-string calculator that needs no power and is not susceptible to glitches. A 24-page "warning order" was sent to military commanders, regional headquarters and reserve units across the country nearly two months ago. "There is a potential for disruption of major infrastructure systems . . . that may require Canadian Forces support to civil authorities," the order begins. The commanders have been given until mid-November to come up with first drafts of plans that will be refined right up to Jan. 1, 2000. The success of the operation depends on "public confidence in the government's ability to manage and provide leadership in dealing with the year 2000 problem," the order says.

Navy captains have been told their ships may have to be docked to serve as garrisons, power plants, field hospitals and soup kitchens.

On land, the official worst-case scenario would have 32,000 soldiers, including volunteer reservists, living and working in the field.

So far, the army says it has sought no cabinet order pressing weekend warriors into service. Rumours in reserve circles suggest the field force could reach more than 60,000, including many non-volunteers, if such an order were issued.

Such talk was not diminished by an article this month on the Year 2000 effort in the Maple Leaf, an official army magazine. Lieutenant-General Ray Crabbe, a just-retired deputy chief of defence staff, said soldiers need not worry about missing their 1999 Christmas holidays.

"As far as Christmas goes, I don't think you could deploy 60,000 troops away from their homes at Christmas, especially from a morale point of view," he was quoted as saying. "I'm not sure you can say the same thing for New Year's Eve."

Almost everyone knows about the problem by now.

Traditionally, most computers recorded years in two digits: "98" for 1998, "99" for 1999 and so on. When "00" arrives, some computers may think it is 1900 or some other base year.

Some may be uncertain of the year or even the day of the week. (Dec. 31, 1999, is a Friday; Jan. 1, 1900, was a Monday. That does not compute.) They may act strangely or shut down, paralyzing complex systems.

Or maybe not. The Year 2000 problem (Y2K for short) has been called both a death sentence for industrial civilization and a fraud perpetrated by computer types.

Whatever it is, billions of dollars and millions of hours of work will have been lavished on it before the end of next year. Greying, out-of-fashion mainframe programmers have found themselves commanding wages as high as $1,000 a day, at least temporarily, in the rush to fix countless lines of code.

If the troops are out in the cold, they will have plenty of company. Police forces have begun warning their staffs not to plan vacations around the turn of the year.

The RCMP's 16,000 officers have been told to book no time off from Dec. 27, 1999, to March 15, 2000, at least until the scope of the Y2K problem becomes clearer.

Toronto's 5,000 police officers have been given no-go dates of Dec. 27, 1999, to Jan. 9, 2000, and Vancouver's 1,150 officers have been given Dec. 29, 1999, to Jan. 14, 2000. Calgary police are considering the same dates as the RCMP, although no order has gone out.

Montreal's fire department says there will be a Y2K vacation ban but has announced no dates. The Toronto department has no special ban but says December and January have customarily been no-leave months because of extra fires associated with candles, fireplaces and space heaters, among other things.

Earth Changes TV Ready to Break Art Bell's story...10/28/98

Hi Folks,
I now know the reason for Art Bell's actions. Out of respect and consideration for Art, I have emailed him requesting his agreement for my breaking the story. Below is the email I sent to Art (artbell@aol.com)

Hi Art,

I hope you and your family are doing well, if not better. I had a heart to heart talk with " Source" (in private). I have become aware of your issues and would like to make myself available to you. I believe I am in the best position to help disclose as much of this story as you are willing.

You had mentioned it would have to come from the media. That would be me. If you wish nothing to be disclosed, I will honor your request. I believe you had mentioned, once the story did get out "I would have a lot to say about it". This may be a good idea for everyone, especially your family. Using me (as the media), you will have better control of the way it is handled.

Mitch becomes one of strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever...10/27/98

MIAMI (Reuters) - Hurricane Mitch, one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded, threatened the east coast of Central America Tuesday with sustained winds reaching 180 mph, forecasters said. At 1 a.m. EST, Mitch remained at least three days from landfall as it edged west-northwest at 8 mph north of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. But its outer bands were spreading heavy rains over the Cayman Islands, Nicaragua and Honduras, causing forecasters to warn of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. One death was reported from flooding in Panama. Mitch grew into a rare, potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane Monday.

A broadcaster opposing point of veiw of Art Bell...10/23/98

Hi folks,
To be fair and maintain my own integrity, I am posting a broadcasters opposing point of view. Mitch

COMMENT'S ON ART BELL'S MESSAGE OF OCT 19 by Rob McConnell

For the past four years, I have been the executive producer and host of THE 'X' ZONE RADIO SHOW, and although I do not broadcast my show from the end of Area 51... I have had most of the guests on my show that Art has had on his... and I must tell you... that I have never, once ever received anthrax in the mail, or any of the other hoopla that Art gets... not have I ever received a threatening letter... call... video tape... fax or email. The events of the past week appear to be one of a well staged 'ratings' ploy, and instead of helping the unsolved mysteries of the universe, all Art has done, is to publicly put his shows right beside the tabloid newspapers that are found in grocery stores throughout North America.

Does Art really think that he is the only journalist / broadcaster who has had personal problems? Come on Art! In March of this year (1998) I was going through very difficult time in my personal life and I did my radio shows... television appearances... and even a BBC documentary about THE 'X' ZONE, even though I was hurting inside - I have a responsibility to my listening and viewing audience. No one ever knew.

As many of you know, I suffer from multiple sclerosis - which is in remission state most of the time but there are those times when I have problems walking... and yet ... not once have I missed a show or let my audience know thta I haven't been feeling up to snuff. I know that Clyde Lewis, the Host of FM 101 KBER's Ground Zero also has had problems - yet, the show must go on. I am also certain that Jeff Rense, Laura Lee, and Mitch Battros have also had problems in their lives - and yet - the show must go on. We may not have 410 stations like Art has, but we do share the same responsibility to our listening audience... unlike Art.

I will be very interested to see how this soap opera turns out and who the villains really are. Here we have Art saying that members of the media have discovered the true story and are not publishing or airing the story because of legal ramifications. Hey wait a minute! This is the same media that exposed the White House expose of President Clinton and Ms. Monica... this is the same press that went after Water Gate... this is the same press that has aired and published other so called "impossible stories". Does Art Bell really think that he is greater than anyone else? Talk about inflated ego!

If there is really something going on in his personal life that is a direct result of his show and the manner in which he does his broadcast, it reflects his lack of journalistic integrity - of which he has been accused of in the past. If he gets back on the air - and you and I both know he will... I am certain that before too long it will be business as usual.

By the way, some of the reverse speech that was found in Art Bell's Oct 19 statement include: "who are you...just an idiot", "why haven't we asked that", "I'm the winner", and "The Bureau want it".

Jerry Springer may be the the tabloid trash host of television.... but Art Bell is the king of radio tabloid journalist, and I for one think it's pathetic and am glad that The 'X' Zone is a place where people dare to believe and dare to be heard, on NEWSTALK 610 CKTB. or THE 'X' ZONE, I am Rob McConnell.

Typhoon Babs pounds Philippines, kills 103...10/22/98

MANILA (Reuters) - Typhoon Babs swept across the northern Philippines Friday killing at least 103 people, blacking out wide areas and causing millions of dollars in damage, officials said. Babs, with winds of 75 mph and gusts of up to 90 mph, was gathering force as it moved slowly into the South China Sea towards Hong Kong, the weather bureau said. Babs first struck the central Philippines Wednesday before skirting the capital Manila on its way to north Luzon island. It was expected to be 300 miles south-southeast of Hong Kong by Saturday afternoon, the weather bureau said.

Weather forecasters crack El Nino's secrets...10/22/98

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Methods used to forecast the effect of the El Nino weather phenomenon may also soon help farmers plan for a dry summer and cities budget for snow plows, U.S. researchers said Thursday. They said the recently developed forecasting methods can predict the general trends of future seasons more easily and accurately than anyone thought possible. ``Things are more predictable than we thought within that otherwise chaotic world,'' Jagadish Shukla of George Mason University in Virginia, who led the study, said in a telephone interview.

Writing in the journal Science, Shukla and colleagues, whose study was funded by NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Science Foundation, said some meteorologists used the new method last winter to predict the harsh El Nino conditions that followed. ``That's not a fluke,'' Shukla said. ``That's not an accident. It's not just El Nino, it's a fundamental property.''

El Nino, a recurring weather system marked by warmer-than-usual water in the eastern Pacific, caused floods, severe storms and droughts around the world over the past year. The new method looks at current scientific conditions to predict the future, rather than making forecasts based on the statistics of past occurrences, Shukla said.

Halley's comet returns in bits and pieces...10/21/98

Shooting stars should be visible October 21st & 22nd
October 20, 1998: The last time Halley's comet visited Earth, in 1986, many observers were disappointed because the famous comet was barely visible to the naked eye. Some years are simply better than others, as in 1066 when the comet was so bright that it terrified millions of Europeans and was widely credited with the Norman victory at the Battle of Hastings. Comet Halley isn't officially scheduled to visit Earth again until 2061 when it swings through the inner solar system on its 76-year orbit, but fans of Halley can see bits and pieces of the comet tonight during the annual Orionids meteor shower.

Each time Comet Halley swings by the sun, solar heating evaporates about 6 meters of ice and rock from the nucleus. Comet debris particles are usually no bigger than grains of sand, and much less dense. Although they are very small, these tiny 'meteoroids' make brilliant shooting stars when they strike Earth's atmosphere because they travel at tremendous speeds. The Orionids meteor shower happens each year when Earth passes through the debris stream of Comet Halley, and meteoroids hit the atmosphere at nearly 90,000 mph. (NASA)

Art Bell denies behind-the-scenes negotiations...10/17/98

Yesterday afternoon, Thursday, October 15, I had a wonderful surprise: my friend and colleague, Art Bell, called. We had perhaps the best off-air conversation in a year. Among other items, Art and I discussed not only his abrupt, shocking "resignation" Tuesday morning ... but the reasons.

I will not divulge details, except to say that his (to many of his friends) completely enigmatic actions are sincere; they are NOT mere "hype" for "Coast-to-Coast"; they are NOT "positioning" for some mysterious, behind-the-scenes contract negotiations with Premiere (his parent network). They are simply rooted in a complex family problem, which has been building to a crisis for a year ... and which climaxed so "messily" on Monday night.

There are government agendas and conspiracies. But I am satisfied -- from a first-hand conversation with my friend -- that this is not one of them! Unless we clearly separate this truth from all the rumors, we are lost; the serious subjects and agendas discussed on "Coast-to-Coast" will be totally negated and ignored, if we do not firmly distinguish a personal crisis from a "black-ops" project.

The good -- actually, great! -- news: Art will be back. With time and a much clearer head, as well as much outside assistance, he can see a way clear to deal with the delicate issues which precipitated this emergency, and he assures me, he will return to both the Show and the audience he loves.

As well he should.

Massive iceberg breaks off in Antarctica...10/16/98

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An iceberg larger than the state of Delaware has broken off the Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica in what scientists believe may be a sign of global warming, the National Ice Center announced Thursday. The iceberg, named A-38, measures 92 miles long and 30 miles wide and covers an area of about 2,751 square miles. The Ronne Ice Shelf is the second largest in Antarctica, located in the southern Weddell Sea. The last time an iceberg of this size broke off a Southern Hemisphere Ice Shelf was B-9 in the Ross Sea in Oct. 1987. Mary Keller, a scientist at the National Ice Center, sighted the iceberg using satellite data gathered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Preparation in Action, The Y2K Bug...10/11/98

(CNN) -- It's just over a year until the year 2000, and some people already are preparing for the possibility of a computer generated disaster by stocking up on groceries and other supplies.  Driven by fear that computer malfunctions will shut off power, transportation systems and automated teller machines, some California communities are banding together to educate themselves about how to survive the potential calamities.

They fear that computers, programmed to read the year as a two-digit number, will not be able to read the year 2000 and will be unable to carry out functions. People have begun stockpilin batteries, propane and nonperishable food in their Santa Rosa kitchen. "I have a battery lamp... and then I store more food up here -- grains and seasonings and stuff like that," she says, pointing toward the topmost cupboards.

In churches and community centers, "Y2K" (year 2000) survivalists are meeting to talk about what might happen at the dawn of the year 2000. A special Senate committee is investigating the potential problems as well.  "The worst-case scenario is that the power grid goes down, that the telephone companies don't work... and other utilities, like water, will fail," says Sen. Robert Bennett, R-Utah. But nobody really knows for sure what will happen. Survivalists concede it's possible that when the time comes, nothing out of the ordinary will take place.

Still, activist Carolyne Stayton insists her preparation will have paid off.   "So what if nothing happens?" she asks. "We've formed community, we have new alliances, we've met new people (and) we've met our neighbors."

Scientists think San Andreas Fault longer...9/29/98

A new study concludes that the San Andreas Fault may be longer than earlier thought and would cause significantly more damage if it ruptures and triggers a major earthquake. The report released found that the section of the fault that begins on the San Francisco Peninsula may be as long as 55 miles, not 32 miles long. The added mileage, in the event of a major earthquake, could quadruple the amount of damage to strike the San Francisco Bay area. (CNN)

Earth bombarded by magnetic burst...9/29/98

NASA says the radiation burst struck Earth's atmosphere August 27 after traveling 20,000 light-years from a newly discovered type of star called a magnetar. The magnetar in question, SGR1900+14, sits in the constellation Aquila (the Eagle).

The energy released by the magnetar in one five-minute burst, said Kevin Hurley of the University of California-Berkeley, was roughly equal to the amount of energy Earth's sun will put out in the next 300 years. "If we could somehow harness this energy on Earth, we would have enough power to take care of everything, power every city, every village, every light bulb, until the end of the universe and far beyond," said Hurley. "But believe me, you would not want this star to be your sun. It's extremely lethal."

"A magnet this strong could erase the magnetic strip on the credit cards in your wallet or pull the keys out of your pocket from a distance halfway to the moon," said Robert Duncan of the University of Texas-Austin.

Magnetars are thought to be dense, spinning stars with a tremendously strong magnetic field (800 trillion times that of Earth) that routinely emits flashes of intense radiation. In fact, NASA scientists said they had begun to detect flashes from SGR1900+14 earlier this year but did not have time to announce their conclusions before the gamma ray blast on August 27.

Astronomers have speculated for 12 years that magnetars, a kind of neutron star formed from the explosion -- or supernova -- of a very large, ordinary star, exist. The detection of what scientists described as a "cataclysmic magnetic flare" could help answer many questions about the structure and life of stars. (CNN)

Future effects of global warming is uncertain...9/16/98

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Science is not close to understanding the future effects of global warming, according to researchers Tuesday who urged a better system for predicting long-term climate change. Otherwise, according to a report by the National Research Council, floods, storms and droughts will continue to devastate agriculture, kill people and destroy property. The report found that climate was changing and would continue to do so with or without human influences. "In 1992 and 1993 ice cores approximately 1.8 miles long were extracted from the heart of the Greenland ice sheet, revealing changes in the Earth's climate system over the last 150,000 years or so," the report said.

Philippine 7.3mg quake sparks stampede, cracks buildings...9/2/98

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines (Reuters) - A powerful undersea earthquake rocked the southern Philippine island of Mindanao Wednesday, driving people into the streets and causing cracks in some buildings but no casualties, police said. The tremor registered 7.3 on the Richter scale and was the strongest to hit the quake-prone Philippine archipelago since a 7.7 magnitude temblor killed more than 1,600 people in 1990, seismologists said. Despite the quake's high magnitude, seismologists said they expected no major damage or casualties because its epicenter, 90 miles southeast of the southern Philippine town of Mati, was away from major population centers.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average suffered its second largest point loss ever Monday, plunging more than 510 points, as worries over the global economy sent the market in a headspinning fall that erased all of this year's gain. Based on early, unofficial results, the Dow was down 512.61 points, or 6.3%, at 7,539.07, its second steepest loss after October 1997's slide of 554 points. However, in percentage terms the drop was not among the top 10. In the broader market, declining issues swamped advances 7 to 1 on heavy volume of 924 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq composite index posted a record loss, falling 140.52 points, or 8.5%, to 1,499.16.(Reuters)

Hurricane Bonnie may have escalated Pfiesteria...8/30/98

Here is some information most people aren't aware of. After at least 20 inches of rain falls onto eastern North Carolina, where about 9,000,000 hogs live on factory farms, all of the cheap hog-waste, lagoon dams will break again dumping about 500,000,000 gallons of raw swine waste into PFIESTERIA-dominated rivers. This will set off a feeding frenzy from this plague-like microbe (pfiesteria) which will start to produce a cloud of aerosol toxins the size of the Pamlico Sound. These toxins have been proven by doctors at Duke and John's Hopkins to cause a neurological syndrome in mammals and humans! It affects the brain. This cloud of toxins will continue to be produced for weeks and possibly months thereafter.

Because big agriculture runs North Carolina and the state's propaganda newspapers, nothing will be printed.  This results in the public being dangerously uninformed   about pfiesteria (the cell from hell).

Thank you, John Hunter

A community for like minded people...8/30/98

Some of us believe that the dangers ahead may provide us also with the opportunity to re-create our relationship with each other and the earth at depth. From chaos new forms emerge. An eco-village is now forming deep in the mountains of Arkansas with a vision for the future which embraces both primitive and contemporary technologies and social/spiritual structures.

The site is abundant with a regular, clean water supply; a fertile "proven" 15 acre organic farm; thousands of acres of forest. It is remote and without easy access to the "outside" world. This is wilderness living, off the grid. The aim is true self-reliance as well as support for spiritual growth. We extend an invitation to individualists who think for themselves and are able to honor the differences of others while offering the nurturing support of community working together for the same ends.

Membership is restricted to a total of 20 adults (children welcome). You may have your own "sleeping" cabin, we share a communal cabin for meals, cooking, socializing. Vegetarian diet. Cottage industry with income sharing and the opportunity to develop private enterprises. Mule-drawn wagons for transport (4-wheel drives so long as gasoline is available). Membership fee - $1500 or a 99-yr. lease of an acre for $2500. The land is paid for in full and is in a land trust. Provisions for members who wish to leave. By-laws exist to govern on an egalitarian model with minimal "rules".

We intend to have the community up and running in 1999 to prepare for Y2K and beyond....

Solar eruption causes geomagnetic storm on Earth...8/27/98

Solar winds blowing at more than a million miles per hour hit the Earth's magnetic field Wednesday, sparking what scientists say could be a significant geomagnetic storm. The U.S. Geological Survey said charged particles from a solar eruption hit the Earth's magnetic field around 3 a.m. EDT and the resulting fluctuations in the field could cause power outages, satellite failures, disruption in communications and the aurora borealis. Auroras are usually seen only in northern latitudes, but may become visible in the continental U.S. during this geomagnetic storm, the agency said. A severe magnetic storm in March 1989 caused the collapse of the Hydro-Quebec power system in Canada, leaving about 6 million people without power. (Reuters)

Scientists report heat wave from 2,000 years ago...8/17/98

Temperatures rose sharply and suddenly in East Africa, and perhaps elsewhere, about 2,000 years ago, showing that global warming is not necessarily caused by humans, researchers said Friday. Aldo Shemesh of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and his colleagues drilled into ancient sediments from a lake on the slopes of Mount Kenya. They found evidence of a 7 degree Fahrenheit increase in lake water temperatures between 350 BC and 450 AD. Writing in the journal Science, the scientists said the warming of the lake water almost certainly reflected an overall warming trend in East Africa at the time. They noted other researchers found evidence of similar warming at about the same time in Sweden and Alaska. (Reuters)

Heat Wave Affects The World...8/12/98

Belgain School children camping in the Swiss Alps were hospitalized for heat exhaustion, schools let out early in Switzerland, and three German states banned some cars to cut back on pollution in the sweltering heat. In Cyprus, the heat wave was beginning to abate Tuesday, as temperatures fell to 102 degrees — only a few degrees higher than normal for this time of year. They were expected to fall closer to the monthly average of 99 degrees in the next two days, said the director of the Weather Bureau, Andreas Philaniotis.

Hospitals have been stretched to the limit with the admission of about 3,200 patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, the Health news agency reported Tuesday that a 40-year-old man died after being hospitalized three days earlier for heat stroke. Three people have died in Egypt, including two brothers, ages 12 and 9, who drowned while cooling down in the Nile on Sunday after three weeks of 100-degree heat. In the Palestinian-run city of Jericho, a high of 108 degrees caused the death of a 45-year-old prisoner.

In Bahrain, 56 men, mostly laborers, were treated for heat exhaustion Sunday after they fainted while working in temperatures above 122 degrees. High temperatures continued throughout much of Europe. In Switzerland, which normally has mild summers, schoolchildren were released from classes in Basel on Tuesday as the country sweated through its hottest weather in three years. Temperatures on Monday climbed as high as 95 degrees.

Temperatures in some parts of Germany hit record highs of 106 degrees, causing dangerous pollution. Three German states banned most vehicles without catalytic converters from the roadways.  High temperatures hit France too. For one American in Paris, the heat was no big deal. “It’s part of the experience,” said Jack Bargaheiser, 36, an architect from Columbus, Ohio, who had found a patch of shade in Paris to avoid the 93-degree heat. “Just like the rude waiters and the good food, it’s part of the experience.” (AP)

Peter's Email Apology.......8/01/98

I was given a listing (small "l" list, NOT a Mailing List) of names of what was called "like-minded people" and, recognizing a number of the names, I had no reason to doubt the veracity of the statement.
As said in the original email, it was a ONE-TIME mailing. It was my FIRST such mailing and, with the overwhelming negative response, including threats to my life & livelihood, it will be my only & last such mass mailing.
PLEASE do NOT respond to the original email (entitled, "Do you receive...") with the CC:'ed names. Your response, too, is sent to everybody listed, exacerbating the problem.
The listing of names (NOT a mailing list) is gone. I had deleted it the day the original was sent, so you'll receive nothing further from me.
Lastly, there are literally dozens of people (if not hundreds) that use the phrase "earth changes" in their work, title, name, etc. Many of these people are now being attacked because of the one mailing sent the other day. None are affiliated with the WEEKLY, none were involved with the one-time mailing. None deserve to be attacked for something they know nothing about.
