CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - An early spring cold snap brought
snow to the Cape Town region, closing down the Du Toitskloof Pass in the country's
wine growing region, weather reports said Saturday. Table Mountain was dusted
with snow on Friday, a rare occurrence that happens once every several years,
said Lucian Banitz, an official in the South African Weather Bureau in Pretoria.
He was not sure the exact year it last occurred. The pass is closed more frequently,
he said. Temperatures plunged to near freezing across the country, chilling
athletes and onlookers at the All Africa Games in
Johannesburg that kicked off on Friday. A low of 36 degrees was expected for
Saturday.
