Floyd Becomes A Hurricane...09/10/99

(MSNBC) MIAMI,— The storm called Floyd, the sixth of the season, grew into a hurricane early Friday, putting several Caribbean countries on alert. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said that if the storm were to threaten the East
Coast of the United States, it would not be for several days.

THE STORM, packing 80 mph winds, was expected to pass to the north of the Leeward Islands, but it could threaten the northeastern Caribbean if it shifts to the south. The governments of Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy issued tropical storm watches.

“The forecast still keeps the center of Floyd well to the north and east of the islands... They may feel the tropical storm force winds at the periphery of the system,” said John Guiney, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
