Update: Death Toll In Greece Quake At 72...09/09/99

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Late-night rescues buoyed the spirits of emergency teams working round the clock, but there were few signs of life from dozens believed to still be trapped in crumbled buildings as the death toll from Greece's quake rose to at least 72. Authorities scrambled to set up tents and find shelter in hotels for thousands sleeping outdoors in parks and soccer stadiums, while inspectors were to expand checks Thursday on homes damaged by the capital's strongest quake in nearly a century. In the hard-hit areas north of Athens, located near the epicenter of the magnitude 5.9 quake, about 20% of buildings checked the day after Tuesday's temblor were marked for demolition.
