Cyclone Heads Toward Eastern India...10/28/99

BHUBNESWAR, India (AP) - Authorities began evacuating thousands of people from coastal areas of eastern India on Thursday as a cyclone with winds up to 140 mph headed toward land. The storm was moving northwest and was expected to hit India's Orissa and West Bengal states, the meteorological office said. An alert was issued for at least 10 districts in Orissa state, where more than 100 people were killed by a cyclone 10 days ago. Nearly 1 million people live in the area likely to be hit by the storm.
