Giant Iceberg Off Tierra del Fuego Rotating...10/07/99

An iceberg with a surface size of 1,750 square kilometres has been rotating on the same spot off the tip of South America for 40 days. The great mass of ice rises 30 metres above the surface - below it reaches 300 metres deep into the depths of the ocean.

Since detaching itself from a glacier in the Antarctic seven years ago, the iceberg, known as B10A, has travelled a distance of 13,200 kilometres. It is now 700 kilometres off the coast of Tierra del Fuego, close enough to the South American mainland to bring it to public attention.

The experts are undecided whether the floating giant is a natural phenomenon or the vanguard of an iceberg armada, which could pop up off the continent over the coming decades as a result of increasing global climate change.
