Tehran City Council Calls for Measures to Deal With Quake Threat

Head of Tehran City Council Rahmatollah Khosravi said on Tuesday that the city council pursues the strategy of reinforcing Tehran's resistance to possible earthquake that may hit the city.

Inaugurating a nationwide `Preparatory Program for Elementary and Secondary Schools to Reduce the Damages from Quake', he said that Tehran is under threat of a quake and the City Council has called for proper planning to deal with possible quake. He said that public training is one of the methods to reduce the damages caused by quake and that reinforcement of the buildings is another way to deal with the threat. He called on the association of civil engineers to seriously take into account the standards criteria in construction of new buildings which should be quake-resistant.

The International Research Center on Earthquake sponsored the nationwide program in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and the Committee in charge of Reducing Losses of Natural Disasters.
