MAPUTO, Mozambique
(AP) -- A fierce storm that has been raging since the weekend
has killed nine people in Mozambique, which is still recovering
from devastating floods that hit the country nine months ago,
state radio reported Wednesday.
Five of those
killed in the recent rains were in the central province of Zambezia
and four were in the northern province of Nampula, radio reported.
Heavy rains have also caused extensive damage in southern Mozambique.
The rains
in Zambezia destroyed 112 houses and killed many farm animals
and coconut trees. The storm also left sections of the provincial
capital of Quelimane without power.
In the southern city of Xai Xai, which was heavily damaged in
the floods earlier this year, people have been fleeing the city
for safer areas, the radio reported. There were no reports of
deaths there.
Mozambique is still trying to rebuild from devastating floods
that hit the southern African country in February and March, killing
more than 700 people.
The floods
destroyed the homes or livelihoods of more than 10 percent of
Mozambique's 19 million people and did about dlrs 1 billion in
damage, the World Bank has said.
