TEHRAN, Iran –– A quake that jolted northwestern Iran has left a 9-year-old boy dead and a 6-year-old boy injured, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported Sunday.

Friday's 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Golestan province also destroyed a house and slightly damaged two others, said IRNA. The wounded boy was hospitalized in the city of Gonbad Kavous.

In 1997, a 6.1-magnitude quake in Golestan killed nearly 1,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless.
