U.S. Says Flu Hitting 37 States...11/16/99

ATLANTA, (Reuters) — The U.S. flu season is well under way with cases reported in 37 states, almost three times the number reporting flu cases a month ago, federal health officials said Monday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said influenza outbreaks, or clusters of cases, were  reported in Indiana, New York and the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico during the week ending November 6, the latest period for which information was available.

Scattered flu cases reported by health officials in 35 other states. Ten states reported no flu cases and three states did not report, the CDC said. One month earlier, flu cases had only been reported in 14 states.

In addition to the two states reporting outbreaks, scattered flu cases were reported in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Deaths from pneumonia and influenza have accounted for a higher than average percentage of deaths across the country for a seventh consecutive week, the CDC said.
