Violent Storms Hit Southern States...05/25/00

(AP) - Violent storms hit parts of Tennessee and North Carolina Thursday morning, causing a small plane to crash and creating  flash floods that forced dozens of people to evacuate their homes. Authorities were also cleaning up in Oklahoma and Arkansas, where power outages and other damage were left by severe weather overnight.

Two men were injured when their Piper Cherokee Warrior went down in a parking lot near Horace Williams Airport in Chapel Hill, N.C. Witnesses said wind blew the small aircraft sideways as it was landing. One man was in serious condition and the other in good condition at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Power outages and wind damage were reported across the region and tornado touchdowns were reported, but not confirmed, from Burlington to the Hillsborough area.
