"Record" heat blasts California...05/23/00

Much of California sweltered in a late spring heat wave Monday as temperatures flirted with new records for a third straight day and power consumption surged to risky levels.

“WE ANTICIPATE probably two records being broken today, if not more,” said Steve Anderson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. “That should be the last of the record-breaking temperatures, at least for a few days.” On Sunday, the temperature soared to a high of 90 degrees in San Francisco, breaking a 114-year-old record for the date of 86. And a slew of other areas sweated it out as the mercury hovered above 100. Pasadena set a record of 99. Riverside set a record of 104 and Paso Robles was 106. At the Bay to Breakers road race in San Francisco, the 70,000 runners began their run with temperatures in the upper 60s, compared with normal race-time temperatures in the 50s. By late afternoon, temperatures hit 90 degrees and people in costumes were gasping for water. About a mile into the race, a man dressed like Elvis in a white vinyl jumpsuit and wig, dropped out, with beer in hand.

Equation:
Sunspots = Solar Flares = Magnetic Shift = Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents = Extreme Weather
