Thunderstorms Disrupt Air Traffic...05/21/00

United and Delta canceled or delayed hundreds of flights Friday because of thunderstorms stretching from Texas to New England. The storm front has already spawned several dozen tornadoes and hurricane winds in much of the Midwest, East and South.

Equation:
Sunspots = Solar Flares = Magnetic Shift = Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents = Extreme Weather (MB)

UNITED AIRLINES canceled about 400 of its 2,400 daily flights. “These cancellations are the result of continued poor weather in key United cities, especially as the storm moves toward the East Coast,” United said in a statement. The airline canceled more than 500 flights Thursday when severe weather hit Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, United’s largest hub. United flights have also been hit by some pilots who are refusing to fly voluntary overtime. United said last week that the pilots’ action, which came in the midst of contract negotiations, was causing it to cancel flights. Customers were advised to check flights at www.united.com or by calling (800) 824-6200 to receive automated flight information. Delta, for its part, told customers to expect delays or cancellations if they planned to travel Friday to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania or New York. Passengers were advised to consult delta-air.com or call (800) 325-1999.
