(MSNBC) A deadly storm system that punished the Midwest with heavy rain and high winds pushed east Friday, spawning thunderstorms from Texas to New England. Delta said the severe weather is expected to cause flight delays and cancellations in several major cities. The system created several dozen tornadoes, one of which was filmed by stormchasers and broadcast by NBC News.
FAST-MOVING storms ripped through Illinois late Thursday, knocking out power to 200,000 customers and forcing the cancellation of more than 100 flights at Chicago’s two airports. Tens of thousands were still in the dark Friday morning, but utilities hoped to restore all power later in the day. An Illinois man was killed when a tree limb landed on his car, police said. And hundreds of trees were down in Arlington Heights and Palatine, Ill. Nearly 3 inches of rain fell in Michigan. Wind gusts of more than 80 mph were reported in Indiana and Illinois, and tornadoes were reported in Iowa. Over the previous 24 hours, some 29 tornadoes had been reported, most in remote parts of Colorado. “We got rain. We got hail. We had wind,” said Rhonda Daniels at the Casey’s General Store in Carlisle, south of Des Moines. “We were all kind of scared. It looked pretty bad out.” Hail that fell in blinding sheets broke car windows in Lake Forrest, another northern Chicago suburb, and hundreds of trees were downed in Arlington Heights, Palatine and other communities north and west of the city.
