New Mexico Wildfire Threatens Ancient Pueblos...05/18/00

SANTA CLARA PUEBLO, New Mexico (CNN) -- They've stood for 1,000 years -- surviving invasions by the Spanish, the Mexicans and the Americans. Now wildfire is threatening to damage some of the ancient pueblos of north central New Mexico.

In a canyon 15 miles from Los Alamos, the 47,000-acre Cerro Grande fire is burning parts of the Santa Clara Pueblo Reservation, site of the Puye Cliff Dwellings and the ancestral home of the Santa Clara people.

The fire, which has burned 200 homes, businesses and other buildings in Los Alamos and damaged buildings at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, already has damaged water resources and valuable archaeological sites on the reservation.
