Underwater City Discovered off Lebanese Coast

An ancient city was discovered earlier this week under the Mediterranean Sea off the shores of Tyre and Sidon, announced the president of the Lebanese Association of Professional Divers.

The submerged city dates back to 2,000 BCE, reported Lebanon's The Daily Star.

Mohammed Sareji told a news conference at his office in Sidon that while diving, he saw many old streets, roads, jetties and squares where statues still stand between 3 and 17 meters below the surface.

"Yarmuta is located along 4 or 5 kilometers between Zahrani and Sarafand, and extends a further 800 meters out to sea," he said.

He showed pictures and video footage of the city, adding that materials used to build the city looked "strong and resistant."
