Spring, where
art thou? That's a question on the minds of residents across the
country Tuesday as a second day of record-low temperatures keeps
winter in full bloom.
Midwest residents
got an unseasonable cold blast Monday, and now residents of Texas
and the Eastern Seaboard are bundling up as temperatures plunged
as much as 30 degrees below average.
The cold is
unusual for this time of year, says Buzz Bernard, a senior meteorologist
with The Weather Channel. "It's ironic that this kind of
cold weather pattern was set for early spring instead of wintertime."
The mercury
dipped as much 25 to 30 degrees below average in parts of the
Texas Panhandle. On the East Coast, West Virginia saw temperatures
that were 20 to 25 degrees below average. In Washington, D.C.,
the chill in the air is due to the 19 degree below average temperature.
"The
cold in Texas is due to clouds and rain as much as any cold air
mass," explains Bernard. "In Virginia, however, it's
a truly cold air mass that's causing the temperature drop."
Freeze warnings
were issued for parts of Georgia and the Carolinas for Tuesday
night, before temperatures begin to rise again on Wednesday.
