Pope John Paul II is taking his landmark tour of the Holy Land to Nazareth, where Christians and Muslims are sharply divided over a plan to build a mosque at a Muslim holy site.

The Pope is due to hold a mass at the Basilica of the Annunciation, which Christians believe is the site where the Angel Gabriel appeared before Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Security is expected to be tight following riots there in October involving Muslim activists.

They are campaigning to build a mosque close to the basilica, on the site of a small mausoleum housing the tomb of Shihab el-Din, believed to be a nephew of Saladin, the Kurdish general who defeated the Crusaders in the 12th century.
