Carnarvon Community Recovering from Cyclone Damage...03/24/00

The Carnarvon Recovery Committee in Western Australia says it cannot estimate how long it will take for the community and the region to fully recover from the worst flooding in 40 years.

The committee is beginning to process claims made by residents who suffered flood damage following the passing of former Cyclone Steve earlier this month.

The state government pledged $1,000 per adult and $200 per child, after declaring the region a natural disaster area.

Committee chair Del Mills says there is criticism that the funding will not go far enough, but it will help residents begin their recovery.

Farmers

Meanwhile, Agriculture Western Australia (AGWEST) has appealed to the state government to take a "whole farm" approach when funding the recovery of Carnarvon growers.

AGWEST has completed a survey of properties affected by flooding from the Gascoyne River, following the passage of Cyclone Steve, and says many growers need much more than just topsoil replacement.

Carnarvon regional director Mark Lewis says the government must help repair damaged infrastructure and assist in providing professional advice, before topsoil can be replaced.

Mr Lewis says about 450,000 cubic meters of topsoil needs replacing, at a cost of more than $3 million - a process which could take at least 12 months. http://www.abc.net.au/news/weather/weath-24mar2000-3.htm
