Solar Flares at Their Peak...03/21/00

COLORADO SPRINGS - If you have trouble with your pager, or other electronic equipment, it could be because we're heading into the peak of the solar flare cycle, which astronomers say happens every 11 years.

Just imagine millions of 100-megaton hydrogen bombs detonating at the very same time. That's how powerful a solar flare is. They're the biggest explosions in the entire solar system.

The flares send millions of tons of solar material into space, sometimes aimed directly at earth. We're protected by the earth's upper atmosphere, but solar flares can interfere with satellites, and that can sometimes mess up everything from credit card transactions to satellite video feedshttp://komotv.com/news/nindexaction.asp?ID=4043
