6.2 Earthquake Hits Japan; Tsunami Feared...07/31/00

TOKYO — An earthquake strong enough to cause structural damage struck the Japanese island of Miyakejima, about 200 km (125 miles) south of Tokyo on Sunday evening. The earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the open-ended Richter scale, was the second major tremor to rock the island in a day. It struck at 9.25 p.m. (1225 GMT) and could also be felt in Tokyo where buildings swayed.

The Meteorological Agency said there was a possibility of a tidal wave, or tsunami, triggered by the earthquake.

Miyakejima and other islands in a chain stretching south from Tokyo have been hit by more than 40,000 earthquakes in the last month, although most could not be felt without seismic equipment. The island's volcano has also erupted several times in the last few weeks.

The earthquake rocked wide areas of the Tokyo metropolitan region in eastern Japan.
