Cambodian Government on Flood Alert as Death Toll Hits 10...07/28/00

Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Sen, has placed his cabinet on high alert as the death toll from the country's worst floods in decades rose to 10 people.

The National Committee for Disaster Management says more than 82-thousand families and 22-thousand hectares of rice are affected by the country's worst floods in at least 40 years.

The Cambodian Red Cross reported at least 10 people had died from a range of flood-related causes including drowning and snake bite.

The flooding has been brought on by the earlier than usual monsoon rains.

Among the seven worst affected provinces are Kompong Cham, Siem Reap and Kompong Thom.
