Greece Sounds Heat Wave Warning...07/26/00

ATHENS, (Reuters) - Greece warned the public and tourists on Wednesday to take precautions as temperatures soared to 42 degrees Celsius (108 Fahrenheit). Emergency medical and firefighting services went on alert and air-conditioned state buildings and sports stadiums were kept open for people seeking temporary relief.

The Environment Ministry warned Athenians to restrict their movements as much as possible, especially by car. Three people died during a 10-day heat wave earlier in July when temperatures in Athens topped 44 degrees (111 F), forest fires broke out and smog shrouded the city. Coolerweather is expected by the end of the week.
