Weather Wreaks Havoc In Europe...07/12/99

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Intense rain and a heat wave swept across central and eastern Europe over the weekend, killing more than a dozen people, flooding farms and blocking rail and road links. In Romania, 10 people died in flooding or drowned in rivers while seeking respite from temperatures as high as 104 degrees. A 40-year-old Romanian man died in the Siret River in western Romania after diving into the surging waters to save his two daughters, who also drowned. Hailstones, some as big as eggs, tore down electricity lines, cutting power to 26 villages near the Yugoslav border, the state news agency Rompres said. The hailstorm killed hundreds of farm animals and destroyed dozens of cars and roofs, the private Mediafax agency said.
