Five Dead in Violent Portugal Storms

LISBON (Reuters) - At least five people have died in landslides and by drowning in the wake of violent storms in north and central Portugal, officials said on Sunday. Rescuers recovered the bodies of a mother and her two small children from the rubble of their house after it was buried by a landslide in the northern district of Vila Real after heavy rain, civil protection officials said.

Two other people drowned in flash floods also in the north on Saturday and an elderly woman was still missing but presumed dead, officials added. The storms caused widespread flooding and briefly cut the main railway link between Lisbon and the northern city of Oporto, the country"s second largest city.
