CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Declaring ``there is no time to lose,'' Pope John Paul II prodded fellow Christian leaders today to step up efforts to heal their divisions -- even offering to discuss the primacy of the Roman Catholic pontiff.

Stooped and appearing tired, John Paul celebrated the first papal Mass in Egypt and later joined leaders of other Christian denominations in an afternoon prayer service in Cairo's Catholic cathedral.

``We do not know each other sufficiently; let us therefore find ways to meet,'' John Paul said at the prayer service.

The Roman Catholic pope once exercised authority over all Christendom, and still claims to do so. John Paul had first raised the possibility of redefining the powers of the Roman pontiff in an encyclical five years ago, although it was unclear exactly what powers he would be willing to relinquish. He renewed the suggestion today with a sense of urgency, calling for discussion and adding: ``Dear brothers, there is no time to lose in this regard.''
