Earthquake Shakes Northwest Turkey...02/14/00

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- A moderate quake shook the northwestern province of Bolu today, causing some roofs to cave in and cracks in walls. A child was injured while trying to escape from class, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5, the Istanbul-based Kandilli observatory said. It was followed by a magnitude-3.8 aftershock.

The quake, which struck on the first day of a new school term, prompted authorities to suspend classes in Bolu province as panicked parents rushed to schools to meet their children, the agency said. An elementary school student fell and broke a leg while trying to escape.

The quake hit a region where tens of thousands of people have been living in tents and makeshift dwellings since a deadly temblor in November destroyed their homes.

The quake was felt in Istanbul and Turkey's capital, Ankara. It also cut telephone lines for several hours.

More than 800 people were killed around Bolu by the Nov. 12 quake, which followed a deadlier quake farther west that killed more than 17,000 people in August.
