Quake Hits Southeastern Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia –– An earthquake shook southeastern Australia late Tuesday night, causing no significant damage but prompting hundreds of calls to authorities, police said.

The quake struck at 11:06 p.m. and was centered in the Gippsland region, about 100 miles southeast of the state capital of Melbourne, said Tony Corke of the Seismology Research Center.

"This part of Victoria is the most active part of the state," Corke said. "It's just that this was bigger than most of them."

Rattling windows were reported as far away as Melbourne.
