Quake Hits Off Indonesian Coast

HONG KONG –– A strong earthquake struck late Thursday under the sea off the southern coast of Sumatra, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

The epicenter of the magnitude 5.7 quake was about 279 miles west of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, the observatory said in a statement. Sumatra is the largest island of the Indonesian archipelago.

Indonesia, which sits on major fault lines, is prone to frequent seismic upheavals.
