SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - About 270,000 North Koreans are believed to have died of famine between 1995 and 1998, according to South Korean government figures released Friday. It compares with 220,000 famine-caused deaths reported by North Korean officials during the period. A U.S. congressional report estimated that more than 2 million people may have died of starvation in the country since 1995. South Korea's National Statistics Office said they produced the estimates on the basis of North Korea's last reported population census in 1993 and testimonies of hundreds of defectors from the reclusive communist country. North Korea has been largely dependent on outside aid to feed its people since 1995 when its agricultural industry collapsed after decades of mismanagement aggravated by years of bad weather.
