NASA Picks Flat Site For Next Mars Touchdown...08/26/99

(CNN) Three months from now, NASA's next Mars lander should touch down hundreds of kilometers from the planet's retreating south polar ice cap on a relatively flat area surrounded by craters and rippling structures. Mission managers announced the landing site for the Mars Polar Lander on Wednesday, describing the target as devoid of large craters and hills, unlike the surface where the last NASA lander bounced down.
