(CNN) Hurricane Dennis, upgraded from a tropical storm, whipped up 75 mph winds early Thursday off the Bahamas, and forecasters warned it could threaten the islands. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami urged people on the southeast coast of the United States, primarily North and South Carolina, to monitor the progress of Hurricane Dennis, saying it could potentially strike land over the weekend.
