THE MASSES of people huddled under Day-Glo tents or simple
bed sheets tied to sticks for a second straight night provided mute testimony
to the difficulties that lie ahead in returning the densely populated region
to normal following Tuesday’s powerful tremor.
In Golcuk, the plight of one family spoke for thousands. Brothers and nephews
of Hacer Akdeniz have been frantically pulling chunks of concrete and household
items from a pile of rubble that was an apartment building. They were energized
by having heard Akdeniz, trapped with her 14-year-old daughter, call out for
help. But that was on Tuesday, and since then, her voice has been silent. “She
sounded tired and afraid,” said Akdeniz’s brother, Ercan. “Now there are no
voices anymore.”
