At Least 13 Die from Floods in Brazil

The Associated Press

BRASILIA, Brazil - Heavy rains pounding western Brazil caused floods that killed at least 13 people and left over 10 missing Wednesday, authorities said.

The rains have not let up since the beginning of week and have flooded several neighborhoods in Cuiaba, about 700 miles northwest of Brasilia, and many residents had to be rescued by helicopter, civil defense said in statement.

The majority of the dead lived along the banks of rivers which overflowed, collapsing homes and dragging their victims downstream, the statement said.

Despite the risk, thousands of people had climbed on top of their houses and were waiting for the police to rescue them.
