Gale-Force Winds Delay NASA Shuttle Liftoff...04/26/00

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - Gale force winds at the Kennedy Space Center grounded the space shuttle Atlantis for a second straight day on Tuesday, delaying its repair and supply mission to the $60 billion International Space Station.

Launch managers had been hoping for a break in a weather system that sent 32-knot winds across the launch pad where Atlantis was poised for flight with the crew of seven astronauts strapped into their seats.

NASA said it would try again on Wednesday, the first time in shuttle history that the space agency has tried to launch three days in a row.

Tuesday's launch was scrubbed with a matter-of-fact exchange between launch control and the shuttle commander.

"Jim, it looks like the winds ... are pretty out of limits and we're going to call for a scrub today,'' Launch Director Dave King told Atlantis commander James Halsell.
