Snowstorm Closes S.D. Highway...04/20/00

(AP) - Heavy, wet snow piled up on the western Plains Wednesday, closing a section of South Dakota's main east-west highway and closing schools in the Nebraska Panhandle. Scattered power outages were reported in the two states as tree limbs broke under the weight of the snow and wind gusted to 50 mph. The South Dakota Highway Patrol closed a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 90 between Rapid City and the Wyoming state line, said Capt. Greg Ingemunson. A blizzard warning for lower elevations across the plains of western South Dakota called for 8 to 16 inches of snow and north wind blowing at 25 to 40 mph. At higher elevations of the mountainous Black Hills, up to 2 feet of snow was possible, the National Weather Service said.
