Meningitis Seen In Returning Islamic Pilgrims...04/21/00

ATLANTA, (Reuters) - The federal government on Thursday urged state health departments to watch for meningitis cases among Islamic pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said three cases of meningococcal disease have been reported in New York City involving people who recently travelled to Mecca, their families or close community contacts.

More than three dozen cases of meningococcal disease have been reported in Europe among Islamic pilgrims who returned from the Haj in Mecca, the CDC said.
